AFAIK, tatkal ticket can be booked only from starting station to the ending station of the train.

Yes, u can keep the boarding as any station in between

Try the official railway site:
http://www.indianrail.gov.in/inet_metro_trns.html
It works well only between 8pm and 11pm IST as the general reservation counters are closed at that time

Be careful if you plan to board at an intermediate station, you need to have the boarding station explicitly mentioned on the ticket, otherwise your berth will be allocated to the waitlisted passengers who board from the starting station.

1. In case of Tatkal, the boarding point can be changed during the booking and this does not take the boarding point location quota into consideration during the reservation process. In other words, we are free to change the boarding point to Y when travelling between X and Z. This holds good even when station Y has its own tatkal quota (intermediate to destination)

2. Tatkal used to be from origination and Destination ONLY. But these days Origination to Intermediate, Intermediate to Destination bookings are also allowed. This saves some amount in the base fare (but full tatkal charges are applicable, though).

3. It seems there are ONLY direct tatkal quotas for 3351/8189
3351 - SL-134, 3A-10
8189 - SL-36, 3A-16
You can book in any of the above trains (both are combined at Rourkela) and change the boarding point to MNGD. I tried couple of combinations of non end to end tatkal quota by those trains, but did not find any.

Dear trnrao,

I think you have forgotten about Advance Tatkal Quota. In all the trains, in which this quota is in operation, you can book Tatkal Berth between TWO INTERMEDIATE STATIONS.

getting off before last station

Is it illegal to get of at the station before the last station if you have a tatkal ticket?

If a station guy who checks tickets asks to check you ticket what is the possible trouble? (I have had people check my ticket after getting off the train at a station.) Does anyone have any experience with this?

No problem. The point of Tatkal is to make you pay for the whole journey of the train, not to make you actually go to the end of the line.

I have gotten off a train before my designated destination, but this was because of Rajdhani rules (which can also force you to book up to the last station), not Tatkal. Also on that occasion no one checked my ticket.

tatkal

The railways only check people randomly at stations, but at some stations they check more frequently than others; if they had checked you there could have been some penalty. With Rajdhani etc. the idea is that the train is mainly for end-to-end users, so officially you're not allowed to get off early.

My main question is can one use tatkal to board at a starting station and get off at an intermediate station, even if one pays full fare?

The second question is: Has anyone had their ticket checked having got off at an intermediate station (with or without a tatkal ticket) while their reservation was till a later station? If so, was there a penalty?

Dear j99r,

With a few exceptions, end-to-end fare is collected from the passengers when they prefer a Berth under Tatkal Quota.

After getting into the train in the Originating Station (or) at an Intermediate Station, if you opt such Intermediate Station as your Boarding Point, you can get down wherever you like, but,

i) you will NOT get any refund for the untravelled portion;

ii) you cannot use this Tatkal Ticket for any other train going in the same direction - not even in Unreserved Coaches of such trains behind you.
