After reading & re-reading the sticky post Booking Indian Rail Tickets from Abroad and its linked article, I just booked my first train ticket. It did not go as described, at which point I noticed the sticky post is from 2012.

Booking today, the Cleartrip.com menus of course had changed. I think I figured out how to link my IRCTC account, but I also eventually received a message that with new regulations I would have to go through to IRCTC to actually pay for the ticket.

While trying to find my way around cleartrip, I figured out how to navigate the new IRCTC process of verifying with the small verification fee. For $1.92 I was able to verify my account with an international number. I was then able to receive on my real cell phone the verification of my mobile number and also verified my email. After those three steps (fee, mobile verification, email verification), I was able to book my first train ticket from the IRCTC website.

As I was submitting the first payment on the IRCTC website I called my credit card processing department thinking it might not be a card that worked on IRCTC's system or that there would be an issue because they would find the transaction suspicious. But while I was still giving them my credit card number, the charge went through. I did stay on the phone with the agent so that they could notate we would have charges posting from India vendors from now until our trip in December.

Congratulations on achieving the desired booking. Some folk are struggling to get the system to work for them, some seem to sail through!

I agree that the moderators/site owners should look at updating such an important thread... It removes some I.M. credibility if items that are simply WRONG are promoted (a sticky) as guidance for folk...

I'd be happy to look at a rewrite of that thread, but I've never booked through the site.

Can anyone give me a quick writeup on what needs to change?

Thanks!

The procedure change mostly without any warning.
The authors of the man on seat61 succeed to keep the info up-to-date.
For the time being refer to that site https://www.seat61.com/India.htm#Buy-tickets-online

His post mirrors my experience this morning. If seat61 is keeping up to date, it sounds like the easiest update would be to create a new sticky with a link to the seat61 website.

It is not just that thread but also this article Setting up your IRCTC and Cleartrip accounts for buying railways tickets from abroad which gives wrong information.

On threads which are seriously wrong now, or have very out of date information in the early posts, I suggest a moderator note (maybe even a red one!) like

Warning: Information in this thread (or its early posts) was correct or relevant when published, but is now wrong or misleading. Please check for posts on this subject that have been made in recent months

...or years, decades, eons

I think un-stickying likely takes care of it. I think most know Google can send you to all sorts of old information. But when I'm using a forum for research I give a lot of attention to the stickies at the top and tend to think they are relevant.

Can you post a link to the sticky here, please? I'll un-stick it.
