That's exactly what I thought but it would appear that IRCTC think along different lines (tracks?)
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

Does anyone know if they can give me my mobile OTP over the phone?

I followed the steps here and so far they have sent me an email to say my OTP will be sent in a separate email, but on both occasions I haven't received any additional emails from them with my code.

I'm off in 6 weeks and am a bit worried I won't get to book my trains in advance.

You have nothing to lose by giving them a call. I wasn't given my code over the phone but I did receive an e-mail pretty quickly after phoning them.

They seem very slow to respond at the moment. I've only had automated responses to my queries for the last few days.

I'm starting to lose the will to live with this system.

I finally got my mobile OTP after phoning them yesterday (they emailed it to me with an hour or two) but now I can't sync my cleartrip account with the IRCTC website. This has to be the most ridiculous system every invented! *rant over

Persistence was key. And, I too nearly lost the will to live throughout this process . In fact, it was only after I gave up, that magically 4 days after my last contact, the mobile OTP came through on email.

Keep up the good fight everybody. It is possible, we know that for sure. However, it may not be worth the time to get a third party like Cleartrip or others to sync, unless you have no Amex (or the ability to borrow one).

Just out of interest - what's the difficulty? I'm really not looking forward to the 'synching' bit' - once I get my OTP
