thanks casey

i'm just a bit concerned about what steven said about extra people sitting there, which presumably means that not only can you not see out, but that you have to lean against the window and have your legs out in the aisle.

how likely is this?

There can be a lot of confusion when boarding the train and going to the side berths, you will often find too many people, 3 persons for the 2 side berths, this is normal, the person with the side upper berth will have a confirmed ticket, the other 2 persons will have RAC (Reserved Against Cancellation) tickets, for nightime journeys - this entitles them to a seat, the lower berth will remain as 2 seats until one of the RAC ticket holders is given a berth, for daytime journeys, the side lower berth may be left in the sleeping position, this allows 3 persons to sit there, though this isn't good if you want to look out of the window,
i'm slightly confused... it sounds like that this shouldn't happen if both berths are reserved by 2 people travelling together, but only if the upper berth alone is reserved.. and the lower berth is then shared by 2 RAC people (plus the confirmed upper berth passenger) - is that right?

ours will be a daytime journey so it sounds like the lower berth could have 3 people for the whole time?

Up to 6* side lower berths can be used for RAC passengers (per carriage), this leaves 3 side lower berths for the general quota, that's why I advise to book early.

*I may have said (in the original post) that 5 side lower berths were used for RAC passengers, I've since found a train that used 6 side lower berths for RAC. (Darjeeling Mail)

ok, thanks steven, i think i get it now!
so the first people to book are safe - is there any way of knowing if you're one of the first 3 (or 4)?

there are currently 392 seats left in SL class - so i should be ok?
(if i can figure out the online booking system!)

You should be OK, just check the seat numbers after you buy the ticket, see post 1 in this thread to check the seat numbers.

sorry if i am being thick here steven, i can see the side berths are numbered 7, 8, 15, 16 etc, but how do i know which ones are reserved for RAC tickets?
would it be the last ones ie 39, 47, 55, 63, 71?
so the first 4 pairs would be safe - assuming the TTE hasn't got one?

and if i find i'm in an RAC seat, i guess i can cancel and go for a berth in the main compartment?

thanks for your patience!

Believe me, even after years of trying to understand Indian Railways, I feel very stupid sometimes, Indian Railways has that effect on people.

There is no sure way to determine what side lower berths will be used for RAC, but you won't be given one of them, the railways will know, and should give you a side upper (SU) and side lower (SL) if you request them (and there are still those seats/berths available).

The first you will know, is when you look at your ticket, if you book online, you'll get your ticket straight away, and it will hopefully say.....

S2 15
S2 16

S = Sleeper Class coach
2 = coach number
15/16 = seat number in that coach.

Gosh Steve, you now are a 'Maha guru of Indian Railways' ! As you are in London you probably are aware of SD Enterprises at Wembley(UK representative for Indian Railways) .... the guy in charge there is a walking dictionary on Indian Railways, you are now in his company!

Well done and keep it up !

I like chatting to the man at SD, but it's been a while, maybe 2 years since I last visited his office.

I was working about 300 metres from his office today, but couldn't find time to visit, why do I always feel so rushed in London?

Those seats are in Sleeper Coach number 4 (S4), and they are side upper and side lower, right in the middle of the carriage.

Two individual window seats that face each other, perfect for daytime travel, have your camera ready.

Hi,

I want to book a railway ticket for me and my wife in first class AC.

My question is:

1) In First class AC, there are only 2 seats in one compartment and compartment door can be locked from inside....right?

What's this got to do with Sleeper Class?

there are 2 berth coupes and 4 berth cabins in First Class (air con and non air con), you can request a coupe, but there's no guarentee, you'll only find out when you o to the train.
