Should I book another ticket?

I thought I was booking 4 tickets from Mumbai to Kota on a Mumbai to Jaipur train. But checking the PNR two are confirmed and two waitlisted PQWL/1 & PQWL/2. This is for a train that is more than 90 days away.

I then read the waitlist faq pinned above in this forum. I learned from there how to check how many tickets were available. There are always only two 1A tickets available for anything short of the full BCT to JP run. I'm getting server errors trying to see what tickets have actually been granted so it's hard to see how that is adjusted as the berths are assigned.

Right now there are only two remaining 1AC tickets for Mumbai to Jaipur. Those tickets don't cost much more than Mumbai to Kota - should I buy them? or perhaps cancel all four and book another four tickets on another train? Or email for more information?

When I was booking I did select an option "Book only if confirmed all berths are allotted in the same coach."

Book the 2 tickets to Jaipur, then book 2 new tickets to Kota, then cancel your original 4 tickets to Kota, the 2 new Mumbai-Koto tickets will then go from PQWL 3 & 4 to confirmed (because of your 4 cancelled tickets).

Which train? Which date are you traveling on? You want 1A only?

Yes 1A.

That same day, also overnight, there's Golden Temple Mail (12903), which has at present four tickets available BCT to Kota.

It looks like max availability is always listed as 8 tickets for MCB to JP, and then there are 2 available MCB to KOTA, so that's only 10 berths I see sold as confirmed at purchase time.

From indianrailinfo there's an HA1 coach plus an A1 coach, which I think means about 32 berths. Presumably some are held for other partial journeys. But what happens to the rest? Not that it matters why, but it seems strange.

Forgot to add earlier: I also received a call from Mumbai this morning from a woman with a heavy accent who seemed very confused to be talking to an American. She asked if I had booked a train ticket yesterday. I told her I had. Then it sounded like she asked something else. When I asked her to repeat it sounded like she got embarrassed and ended the call.

An HA carriage has only 10 x 1A berths (and 20 x 2A berths), an A carriage is all 2A berths.

Don't worry about the woman calling you, Indian Railways randomly calls people to check they're not travel agents, this happens mostly on the day tickets go on sale, and the day Tatkal tickets go on sale.

Given your travel date (I worked it out via availability data), forget the Golden Temple Mail, fog (in the north) will be a serious issue when you travel, and although the Jaipur bound train might also be affected, nowhere near as much as the GTM, it travels all the way to/from Amritsar (and not the shortest route between Amritsar & Delhi), so could potentially be severely delayed coming south (though has a 16 hour turnaround).

You can still get PQWL 3 & 4 from Mumbai to Kota (in 12955) and 2 available to JP, so my first suggestion is still an option.

Booking 2 sets of 2 tickets might mean you're not seated together, but don't worry.

If 2 of your travel companions get the 2-berth coupe, the other 2 passengers in your 4-berth cabin will happily swap to get the much sought after coupe.

If you get 2 berths each, both in 4-berth cabins, I'm sure one of the other couples will swap.

And if you and your travel partner get the 2-berth coupe, bid the other 2 goodnight, tell them you'll see them in Kota, then enjoy the coupe.
