Probably the right side window seats as the train climbs towards Shimla...though a fading memory
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

Right from Kalka to see the valleys!
Most of the time it will be on right.. Then valleys changes to left around Dharampur Station. I am sure that Solan Station also is also on the Same side(left side valley).
Then it again changes to Right. I remember valleys will be on right around Shimla Station. Its all confusing.

Don't worry both side will give you enough sight seeing option.

Or you can try to stand at the door....jumping from left to right...as I do on train journeys...enjoying the serene and continuously differing running landscapes of India

I do not think there is any provision in the reservation system for you to choose which side your seats are alloted. No point worrying about it!

You cannot get side preference. You can opt for a window seat, which you are likely to get anyway as you will book 2 seats.

My 2 penny:

Shivalik Dlx (241) is not like all 2-seaters on both sides looking at the front. There are a few (guess 2 pairs) seats, which are facing each other and are beside windows. You get seating options as "Window seat" and "No choice" while booking online at IRCTC site. You may choose both as windows seats and if available, you would probably be allocated the window seats facing each other!

Romantic start to the honeymoon, eh!
Did you wear the other person's shoe today?

You would still need a very knowledgeable booking personnel, who knows what seat numbers are opposite each other in Shivalik Dlx coach - otherwise, you may get in the same problem.

In other words, if he/she does not know which of the window seat numbers face each other, how can he book that? However, run a check with the ticket booking personnel before he actually books if knows, and some of the booking clerks really are very knowledgable and helpful.

I'm not sure if the booking clerk is able to see the seats being booked before pressing the button, so not much help from me on that.

I would suggest that select 2 window seats if you are booking online the 1st day of ticket sale opening (90 days ahead). Else you may safely choose one seat as window and the other as "No choice" and you are likely to be sitting side by side, and obviously the window seat goes to the lady!

Shivalik Dlx in Nov might have vacant seats

I am not an expert on this but my feeling is that since Shivalik is meant mostly for tourists (too expensive and too romantic for locals), in November, which is not a peak tourist season, there might be many vacant seats in the train. Which means you will be able to move from seat to seat to feast on the scenery from the most advantageous side.

As for me, being by myself and not being willing to spend so much time on the toy train system in which the scenic route might become tedious after an hour or so according to some accounts I read, I took the 14:25 Simla Kalka Pessanger from Simla up to 3 stations afar. The fare was Rs 2 (The entire 99km distance from Simla to Kalka cost Rs 16 on this passenger train, in contrast bus costs about Rs 80, and Shivalik Dlx costs Rs 280), I got down at the third station from where there was a bus back to Shimla (7 kms, Rs 5 fare, not every station is connected via bus system). Entire process took about an hour, had a chance to mingle with the locals and had time left for other fun activities in Shimla.

Not at all - at least if I go by my mid-Nov 2006 experience. We had 2 couples who were travelling in 2311 Kalka mail to catch Shivalik, which was WL for them. Both of them remained WL, on a cool Monday morning!

And for this year, I don't think it'll be much different either. See the booking pattern of Shivalik Dlx from Oct till Nov 2, the max date for which you can book ticket. It seems you've about 90 seats on it, but the booking for Nov 2 is already done for about 70 seats!!

Thanks for correcting me. I always thought Shimla was for summer vacation and perhaps winter sports. Didn't know November is a 'peak tourist season' too! Why is Shivalik Dlx so full? Marriage, honeymoon and marriage anniversary season? Or some other reason?
