I dont think they ask for age proof when it is clearly visible that the person is a snr. citizen.

My parents and my in-laws were asked for age proof till they turned 62-63. After 65 years of age, the TTE typically hasnt asked for it. There have been a few cases when he has asked, but it has been an exception.

yes. and that is why i mark her as sr. citizen without fear. btw, she does have an i-card that shows her age, only it is not one among the prescribed list...

but i could imagine why someone would consciously deny the discount, if they were sure they cannot prove it if questioned...

Our experience in February/March was that TTEs were generally lax regarding checking our IDs. My wife has just qualified as a Senior but only one TTE out of 11 asked to check her passport. As the same chap also wanted to check my passport I'm not sure if he was checking her age or not.

One oddity we discovered while booking at a PRS counter at Sealdah was that IR computerised booking system does not allow a Senior's discount on the Matheran. Not really a problem as the full ticket cost is low anyway but it did explain why I got persistent failures for this trip trying to book on-line with IRCTC.

I don't know if there are any other trips where Senior's discount is not available. Nor am I sure if this is deliberate policy or some kind of foul up.

I know for sure that in Garib Rath, SrCtzn discount is not applicable. For Male, it works out OK (as long as they dont get the side berts), but for Female, it is a loss making option.

Also, Tatkal quota does not allow for SrCtzn discounts.

Reg your Matheran train, when I tried to get the discounted fare on IR, I get the error that 'No concessions allowed on this train' - so I presume that explains why on PRS (or IRCTC) it did not work. But it is funny they did not state it clear enough...

Thanks all for your kind reply to my quires, Mr. Asishdas you are correct its a legal right given to a senior citizen in our country, I was just looking at it from another angle after the hike in the train fares for the safety of train movement and then the controversial roll back on train fare for certain class, Safety is the most important and should be given the highest priority so my small contribution towards rail safety. But now after going through all the replies will surely give it a thought. Thanks to all.

Senior citizen

Hi,

I am French so I don't understand very well some English words.

What do you mean by Senior citizen? I understand you need to be 60 or more but does the word - citizen - mean - Indian citizen -?

Thanks for you help.

If your enquiry is regarding the availability of Senior Citizens discount on Indian Railways fares then it applies to all - not just Indian citizens. Males aged 60 or over get a 40% discount , Females aged 58 or over get 50% discount.

Any male above the age of 60 is considered as senior citizen. Note: There is a different age criteria for males and females.

Many foreign members of IM have availed the senior citizen discount in Indian Railways.

While this question has been answered above, this is an interesting point in itself. Maybe IR should consider renaming this to 'Senior Passenger' discount instead to remove the confusion on citizenship requirements?

When you book a ticket from IRCTC/Cleartrip website it automatically gives the discount once you put your age in regardless of where you come from in the world

I am booking toy train tickets from Ooty-Coonoor and Coonoor-Ooty in first class, but Senior Citizen discount is not given in the final payment page!!

It shows "Concession Opted" beside the passenger details, but not given actually.

Senior Citizen Concession

Senior citizen discount is not applicable for foreigners.
However I am not sure if it has some class restrictions as well for domestic travellers. I have been able to get the concession till upto 2nd AC.
Also concession is not available for Tatkal booking.

Checked on IRCTC website - and concession is available for all classes. This may be an issue with it being a toytrain/special route train! (not sure)
