Sending suitcase by rail

I would like to send 1 suitcase (trekking gear) from Haridwar
to Chennai, as I will be flying out from there about 6 weeks
later. I know this is possible, but will they keep the suitcase
in Chennai (e.g. Egmore station) until I can pick it up?
Thanks for any help...

Yes, they can put your luggage in Chennai. But it is advisable that please collect the luggage as soon as it arrives as there were cases where the luggage lost. If you have anybody in Chennai then ask them to pick your luggage as soon as it arrives.

Thank you for your replies.
After trekking I want to send gear, that I don't need in a
suitcase to Chennai, but I will be travelling for another 6 weeks in the north of India. I will fly back to Australia from Chennai and pick the suitcase up just before the return flight (if that is possible). I don't have anyone who could collect it for me earlier...

There are several private transport companies...I might be tempted to believe that they may deal with marginally better. and it would be easier for you to coordinate and retrieve.
