Hi
I am curious. How does the second sitting on shatabdi or intercity express (4211 for example) compare to the Chair Car? Apart from the aircondition? It is recommended to book 2S on this trains for short rides? Will a seat be reserved? Or are they as crowded as "ordinairy" S2-compartments on normal trains?
Thanks

Second seating is recommended for shorter rides and if you go through second seating it will not be like a unreserved compartment.

It will be decent and you are comfortable for short journeys.

Go ahead and enjoy.

2S will be fine, though may be slightly chilly early morning in winter months on trains in northern India, but I travelled by the door at about 09:00 last winter and didn't feel cold.

On Intercity trains there's a good chance you'll have extra people at the end of the carriages, and maybe even some people in the aisle, but your seat is an individual seat, and only you can use it.

There's no 2S in Shatabdi trains, but there is in all Jan Shatabdi trains.

The seats in 2S are mostly like the following photo, though some trains (not many in my limited experience of 2S) have older style seating where 1 padded seat is supposed to seat 3 people, but sometimes has more.

And here's the seating layout.

Strange allotment of seats in Jan Shatabdi

I booked four tickets for my family (incl 2 senior citizens) on Dehradun Jan Shatabdi for Haridwar. I indicated just one window seat.
Finally the seats alloted were 52, 53, 56, 60(WS) despite there being 258 seats available.
Why has this strange allotment happened when all passengers are together?

Booking online it is randomly distributed. You can always during the journey, exchange seats with cooperating passengers.
