Hi,

I'm going with a friend to Cochin in the early morning Bangalore train. The train has only two kinds of cars, Second Sitting (without AC) and AC chair car.

1. Are the seats face to face or are they like an airplane (for both AC and non AC?)

2. How many seats per row and column and can you define them please? Is it two one side, walking path and 3 on the other or 3 - 3 or something else?

Thank you,

Anita (Resident of India but not Indian)

Have a look at the following diagrams for AC chair car and non AC, though there are a few types of each and it's very difficult to know what type a particular train uses.

AC Chair Car type 1 (CC)

AC Chair Car type 2 (also CC)

Till date, I haven't seen any CC arrangement having just 4 seats in the first row.

Wow, it's the opposite for me, I've only seen then with 4 in first row, but I've not travelled on a 'proper' Shatabdi yet (only Jan Shatabdis), and I know they have a different layout, and those diagrams you posted are Shatabdi diagrams.

It was just named Shatabdi. However that doesn mean that the seat layouts did not apply for other trains too. The diagram I have provided you with is very much existent in the modern days. Earlier in 95, when I had travelled by Rajdhani Chair Car (They have been removed now), the arrangement was similiar to what I have posted.
the only difference between the two diagrams (named Shatabdi) is due to the addition of extra berths at the end).

However the 2*2 (Executive chair car) diagram, applies only for shatabdi. Kindly ignore this name for the CC Class Diagrams.

I don't know if things are different in Northern India, but the only times I've used AC Chair Car are in the South, Pinakini Exp and Jan Shatabdi between Chirala and Vijayawada, and the Jan Shatabdi from Trivandrum to Alleppey, my photos and diagrams are from the Trivandrum Jan Shatabdi and the Pinakini.

Here's Indian Railways own diagrams for CC, they show seperate diagrams for Shatabdis (though Jan Shatabdi trains hadn't started at that time), but the number of mistakes on those diagrams is staggering, so it wouldn't surprise me if they have other things wrong as well.

The diagrams for type-i and type-ii are correct. But, according to my own experience, I did not come across such layouts in the recent times. Somebody else can confirm.
PS:- Shatabdis, Duronto, Jan Shatabdi, Other trains has 2*3 Arrangement. (CC)
Garib Rath, Yuva has 3*3 Arrangement. (CC)
Shatabdi also has ECC with 2*3 Arrangement.

Barring the (Non-LHB) Shatabdi CC coaches (Also Garib Rath/Yuva CCs), almost all CC coaches have only 4 seats in the first and last row. So the configuration is
2 rows*4 seats
13 rows*5 seats
Total: 73 seats

There are a few (rather old) CC coaches that have 14 rows of 5 seats (Total: 70 seats), but by-and-large the 73 seater CC is the norm.

Thanks for the clarification.
