Seat No/Berth question

After a bit of a hassle I have booked three e-tickets for my wife and I. The seat number/berth I have on the tickets are:

0017/SL
0030/SU

0011/SL
0012/SU

0059/UB
0001/LB

The seat numbers are separated in 2 of the 3 cases. Does that mean that we will not be close to each other in the carriage? Or is where each seat is worked out later?

Thanks

You'll have to tell which class --- although some of the train buffs on Indiamike are so expert they probably can tell that from the seat numbers!

If you download the IndiaMike Train Guide from this link, one of the things you will find is a chart of the berth numbers

Hi there, when I was in India I travelled in sleeper class all of the time which is fine. It doesn't look like your first and third tickets have seats together. I'm not quite sure what the letters mean but ub is usually upperberth, ie the top bed which is a good one to get, lb is lower berth the lowest one not a great one to get as you may have to move people off your bed to go asleep and then they may try and curl up beside you anyway SL is usually just the code for sleeper class and not sure about the other one, maybe check out the train threads on this website. Enjoy, Diddles.

SL in this case means Side Lower
SU means Side Upper

UB is for Upper Berth
LB Lower Berth

It seems that you will not be together for the 1 st and 3rd journeys.
And you don't mention coach number.

I don't know how it usually works in class 2A and 3A : I travel sleeper class where you can ask people to exchange berths numbers.

Following Nick's link above, you'd have two separate side berths on the first journey, 2 benches inbetween you.

2nd: Two side berths on top of each other.

3rd: Two separate regular berths at both ends of the car.

Not great, but... Those side berths tend to be a little cramped anyway but what can you do right. Mind you I may be wrong, just figured I'd see what I could come up with. Correct me folks!

Indian Railways are very clever; they know what happens when couples travel together.

The first trip, they have kept you close, but apart, this is to help you get to know the locals and fall in love with India.

The second trip, together to share all your wonderful experiences.

The third trip, as far apart as possible as you'll no longer be talking to each other, "I think we should go here", "well that’s typical of you" and so on......

Unless you're a few inches over 6 foot, side berths are perfect in 2A + 3A, even better if part of the journey is during the day. (wrong here, see below)

On the first trip, you will both be sitting opposite a person, chances are that one of those people will be happy to swap seats.

I don't know what happened with the 3rd train, but hopefully you can still persuade someone to swap seats, that is if you're still talking to each other.

I hate to disagree Steven but I'm 5.6 foot and the side berths are uncomfortable for me to sleep on. Too short!!

Indian Railways reaching out to people

A little train story!!

A friend of ours was taking the train to Pushkar from Delhi. He boarded the train, found his seat and settled in for the 10 hour journey. The train was no sooner under way when he began to hear a strange thumping sound mingled together with vaguely human cries and groans. This being India he paid the noise no heed at first. However the noise persisted until our mate decided to go and investigate. He got up and followed the noise towards the carriage door area. On reaching the carriage door he was astonished to see a wizened old head peering through the carriage door window, pleading "help sir please Help".
Our Friend eventually got the man safely aboard. It turned out the old vagabond had been trying to get a free ride. As the train was pulling out of the station he jumped aboard. Unfortunately he only had one arm and the door was locked so he had been banging his head on the door trying to get someone's attention!

I'm about 5' 9" and can manage the side berths for length, but...

There is absolutely nothing to spare for putting your valuables bag behind your head

They are very narrow; you have no choice but to stretch out

There is gap, or the hights are different where the two lowered seatbacks meet: this can be uncomfortable.
