as advised by you mats... lets discuss ur southern sojourn in thishere thread

one question: why mysore?
topography in mainland karnataka can be avoided IMO.
coastal and forest karnataka is more scenic.

why not go directly to cochin from chennai, and hop onto the konkan railway there?
travelling across tamil nad will be an interesting journey -
i've done tamil nad by road, and i just love them rural places and folks there. and the cuisine... yum yum.

it'll save you time, and in them saved days - you can visit places on coastal karnataka

Hi Steven love your articles.I have been fortunate enough to have travelled through all states in India except Kashmir in trains. Wanted to check about the Shimoga-Talguppa Rail Bus. Is it still operational? I stay in B'lore - whats the best way to get to Jog Falls. Im travelling next month.
Cheers.

No wonder I missed it, I was looking for a train.

I could do this ride in a week or so.

Has anyone here done it during the monsoon? Is the line likely to be
washed out?

What is there to see or do in and around Talguppa between the train's
scheduled arrival at 10:40, and return trip departure at 17:20? How
much should a taxi or auto to Jog Falls cost?

about a year ago, I heard the line was closing for gauge conversion, I don't remember reading about it actually closing, but I suggest you try to find out if it's already closed.

Maybe go to a big Chennai station and ask the staff for the telephone number of Shimoga Town station, they should know the status of the line.

My IRFCA mates have enquired and confirmed that the Shimoga-Talguppa line is closed for gauge conversion now.

I have covered a few interesting and scenic railway routes and made a report in my journal -

Yes it is, I'm 99.9% sure of that, I've certainly not read about it closing, and there's no planned upgrade works.

Steven,

Just tried to go to the IRCTC site but it's down this time of day. But I went to eRail.in and put in PTK and JDNX and no trains show up?

Perhaps there are only passenger trains without reserved seats. I think those would not show on eRail.

I can't ever remember finding the trains on the Indian Railway website, even though one of the trains has First Class.

Dear Steven,

In the latest Northern Zone Time Table, the Pathankot-Jogindernagar Passenger Trains have been listed, but none of them is having a Coach with Reservation Facility. Hence you cannot find them in IR.Website (or) E-Rail.
