Greetings to all!

I will be flying into IGI airport, New Delhi, in afternoon of May 17th and next day i.e. on May 18th I need to board Punjab Mail/12138 at 4.55 am from NDLS; So I plan to stay overnight at New Delhi railway station, So my queries are:

1) How are the retiring Rooms and upper class waiting room at NDLS in terms of basic amenities and safety?

2) Is there any options for advance booking of retiring room for the day mentioned?

3) What are the procedures one need to follow for booking the retiring room?

4) Where is retiring room located within the New Delhi railway station ?

Your suggestions are highly appreciated

Hello IndoRail, all I can sort-of vaguely answer and so in fact not so adequately as you'll see is (and maybe it'll inspire someone else to give you the details ):

I'm never 100% sure of this, but to my best knowledge, there isn't, for these retiring rooms anywhere (to the unsuspecting reader: sort of like hotel facilities at not all railway stations, varying from dorms to actual rooms. Not to be confused with waiting rooms.)

I dunno, as again the dumb foreigner that I am , I'll just look and ask around for them, then you'll get to speak to whoever oversees it. So I guess that's also my approach to your nr. 4. It's been said here you need to carry an ID to use them, and a copy of that ID for them to keep. Plus and obviously perhaps I believe you do need a train ticket for it, incoming or outgoing. The latter same as technically for the waiting rooms of your travel class, btw.

I've invariably found them full whenever I've asked for them anywhere (one suspects they get booked up by VIP's and the likes, who then probably do manage to book them ahead. Other than that, demand will no doubt far exceed supply), but just recently again people were saying they'd sometimes managed to get them (or in their dorms, more precisely) at NDLS specifically. One can always ask.

If not and you'd like to lay your head down for a few hours, if you head straight out of the station at the Paharganj side, along and around Main Bazaar stretching straight ahead here across the road (leave the parking lot in front at the left-hand side, now cross over), there are dozens of hotels, ranging from budget to say mid-range. Lots of Western backpackers here, but plenty of Indian commuters and travelers use them, just as well.

The retiring Rooms are allotted on twelve hourly basis at 8 AM and 8 PM every day; and staying in waiting room for around 12 hours would be very tiresome!

It should be considered as very safe, seeing the risk area. All the amenities are also available there!

No

You would have to line up on the window designated for the purpose with a completed form and room/bed in dormitory would be allotted as per availability.

In my humble opinion, indorail should think of Rail Yatri Niwas (it's in campus of NDLS, though costing Rs 1100/-) where online booking starts around three weeks in advance!

Thanks machadinha and Prakaant for your detailed replies; really appreciate your effort and time for helping me out ... checked ginger hotels (Rail Yatri Niwas); that will be the best option for me as to get away from hustle and bustle of New Delhi railway station and get refreshed for next run ... Once again THANKS ....cheers!!

Any idea about the luggage office in New Delhi railway station... in case if i'm with extra luggage information may come handy

Was waiting for someone else to answer again, IndoRail; once again, I can only say that I'm pretty positive it will be there... but I've never used it there, so don't know any details. It'd just be a look & ask around thing again to me

It will be pretty much like using the cloakroom anywhere I imagine; let us know if you're unfamiliar with the procedure, and we can explain.

Following a procedure is not an issue, but locating a place in station is the hardest part that too if one is with bulky luggage...sigh... ..

Yes, correct, certainly; that I'm afraid I precisely cannot help you with

Let's hope some others may yet be in on it; or, see what a search here on it might do. I know it gets discussed. Besides a variety of keywords to use though (cloak room? cloakroom? left luggage? Now not to mention a gazillion ways to denote and misspell NDLS), could be many trees for the forest, either way...

Yo I read somewhere a few months back that all the IR retiring rooms will be available for online booking thru the IRCTC site. Of course I don't have any confirmation of this in reality and I am on the other side of the planet. Maybe someone on the ground can verify this. I've never used IRCTC to book tickets so I don't know all their latest machinations and bunny brained ideas ( like deliberately inconveniencing non residents asking for crap like Indian mobile number, ration card and birth certificate etched on palm leaves etc).

Here are the sources to the news ( just so people don't think I am pulling it out of my you know what).
I am also nebulous on whether this new online booking is Chennai specific or Southern Railway specific or the whole of Indian Railways. Again, someone on the ground can confirm the validity of these articles below and one of them is an official SR site.
