I would suggest come down to Dehradun. From there you should be able to get a Deluxe bus for a gruelling ~ 10 hour journey.
Or come back to Delhi, spend a day around Delhi and take the comfortable Volvo bus for a gruelling 15 hour journey. |

Bus from Delhi
The bus from Delhi to Nainital was my first long bus trip in India several years ago, and it still rates among the most uncomfortable ones -- cramped, noisy, didn't sleep a minute.
Take the train by all means. Nainital is wonderful, although I caught a nasty bug in the fancy cafe/restaurant about halfway along the lake (the one which is build on a platform protruding into the lake, if that makes sense.) |

It'll be more convenient for you to cover Almora, Binsar, Kausani and Ranikhet; rather than Kullu-Manali; from Nainital.
You may visit Kullu-Manali and other destinations in Himachal on a later trip.

Hi Jay,
You shouldn't be addressing anybody as sir, mate. Well, the simplest would be to come back to Delhi. However, if you are prepared to take a little uncertainty, do the dehradun route. There is a train from Kathgodam/Ramnagar to Dehradun. Take that. Then, there should be good buses but I have never done that. I was just thinking this might be more interesting. However, if you are totally new and don't want to do any research about bus and road quality, then coming back to Delhi is better. The assured Volvo buses from Delhi are considerably better. |
