Record Delays?

Ive returned from India some weeks ago and I was wondering if we were just plain unlucky with traindelays?

Our first train was 4-5 hours late on the +-5 hour journey Dehli-Jaipur, the trainattendants stated with big smiles that this was a new record on that trainjourney. Almost seemed like they were congratulating eachother with it...

The other trains always arrived a few hours 2-3 hours late. Maybe one or two were actually almost on time.

But then our last train Varanasi-New Jalpaiguri (normally not our last but we lost courage after this ) made a 13 hour delay!!! It already arrived 9 hours late and made the extra 4 hours under way. Its destination station was Guhwati so no guess how late it arrived there.

Ive heard most people saying that the trains in India are normally on time or atleast not too much delayed, so is this exceptional? And what is your Record delay?

The superfasts, Rajdhanis and Shatabdis normally run on time. The other mails and expresses are invariably delayed by a few minutes to a few hours!!

Trains passing through Bihar and Uttar Pradesh get delayed many times due to reckless chain pulling by passengers to suit their individual needs!!

My record delay was experienced in October, 1996 at Delhi Jn. station. It was at least
9 hours !! I say at least because when the Howrah-Kalka Mail scheduled to arrive at Delhi Jn. at 19=50 failed to do so till 05=00 the next morning, we cancelled the tickets, rushed to New Delhi station and caught the 06=00 a.m. Express to Kalka!! Hence, till date I do not know how late the train actually was that day!!!

Many people complain bitterly about train delays in India. However, my record for train lateness was 28 hours on an Amtrak train (U.S.A. National passenger rail) between Albuquerque, New Mexico and Los Angeles. I never experienced more than a couple of hours delay in India, even on routes such as Delhi-Howrah and Chennai-Delhi.
