railway distances

Are the distances in railway schedules (at www.indianrail.gov.in) in miles or kilometers?

kilometres.

Though India is Metric, you'll find the imperial? units used in seemingly random places. Water tanks in Railways sometimes will say 3000 gallons.

I'm a bit confused now: I checked the distance between Kanchipuram and Arakkonam in Google Earth - it's around 30 km. But the railway site says the distance is 16 - that would almost perfectly correspondend to the 15.5 miles that are about 30 km. ???

Dear Mio

The distance from Kanchipuram to Arakkonam is 28 Kms.
In Table No.53-A the distance between these two places
is wrongly indicated as 15, that is, Arakkonam Jn./83>>>>Kanchipuram/98, but 98 should be read as 101.

In Table No.53, the distance between these two places, however, has been correctly indicated, that is, Kanchipuram/95>>>Arakkonam Jn./123.
