Question for the gurus....

I have to go to Bareilly in November for a wedding. I would like to go to Udaipur from there. From everything I can tell, the easiest way would be for me to come to Delhi and catch another train to Udaipur from there. Unfortunately, I am having a hard time figuring out which train to take from Bareilly. Is there a train that will reliably get me to Delhi by 2-3 PM and give me enough time to catch an overnite train to Udaipur?

Will I be better off taking a flight? There is no airport in Bareilly, so I would be flying from Lucknow to Udaipur or Delhi to Udaipur....

What do the experts think?

There is a Bareilly-Bhuj (Gujarat) train, you could take that to Falna (for Ranakpur/Kumbhalgarh) or Abu Rd (for Mt. Abu), it's then easy to get to Udaipur from any of those places.

However, The Bhuj-Bareilly train is a slow train I think and I can't remember the times, I'll just check.

Awful times.

Bareilly 06:10, Falna 23:10, Abu Rd 00:45.

However, the train gets to Delhi at 11:25, plenty of time to catch a Jet flight (Rs4975) at 16:35 getting to Udaipur at 18:10.

I've no time to check for better alternatives, have a look at the following websites.

For trains try www.erail.in

(the 2003A Bareilly-New Delhi is a 'summer special' and may not still be running in November)

For flights try http://www.ixigo.com/

Thanks. I was hoping there would be a slightly later train. Indian weddings tend to go into the wee hours of the morning, and I will have couple of little ones with me.

I did try the link you gave. There is another train that leaves Bareilly later (around 9-10 AM), but is coming all the way from Assam in NE India. It reaches Delhi at 4 PM, around 3 hours before the Delhi-Udaipur train. Given the length of its route prior to Bareilly, there is a reasonable chance for it to be delayed enough to cause me to miss the Udaipur tran.

Looks like it is the 6 AM train for me...

Don't rely on a train coming from Assam, a 3 hour delay wouldn't be unusual.

I'll try to find a better option, but the more info you give the better.

Is Udaipur the only place you're looking to get to? Falna & Abu Rd have more trains from Delhi, or Kota (for Bundi) could be an option for a stopover.

The only train to Udaipur from Delhi is the overnight train....just a thought, a new line is opening sometime in the next few months offering a different route and additional train from Delhi to Udaipur, it should be operational by November.

Do you prefer trains all the way to Udaipur?

What class?

How about a short, overnight train (or morning train) from Bareilly, then a flight to Udaipur?

What day of the week will you be departing Bareilly?

Man, you're awesome...and extremely helpful.

Ok, let me answer one at a time. Agree about the train from Assam being delayed and will not consider that.

Udaipur is the only place I am interested in. I grew up in that town...and my 4 and 7 year old daughters are ready to see what Dad gets all nostalgic about

I am ok taking connecting trains via Delhi, Jaipur, Kota etc. The preferred class would be AC1. I have read your opinion, with much interest I might add, on AC1 in the past....however, I think the kids could use some peace and quiet after the wedding's hubbub.

As for flights, the only way seems to be going via Delhi...and I am fine with that. If it helps any, the date of travel will be 11/20 (Thursday) and early morning Bareilly-Delhi trains on Thursdays seem to be limited. The wedding itself is on the 19th.

Overnight train (Bareilly-Delhi) means I spend an extra day in Bareilly as opposed to Udaipur...not something I am keen on.

Right now I am leaning towards one of these options:

1. Train 4311 to Delhi and then overnight train to Udaipur
2. Train 4311 all the way to Jaipur and the overnight superfast to Udaipur

The only difference between the two is whether I want to connect via Delhi or a shorter break in Jaipur.

Have not heard about the new line, though that would be awesome. Any idea about the route/timings, etc?

Also, any words of wisdom from those with experience....opinions on subjecting the kids to such travel immediately after the excitement of an Indian wedding? They're used to early morning flights followed by 6-8 hour long car drives after that.

Whew....and I thought the Houston-Delhi tickets were the hard part...

bareilly-delhi by air-conditioned bus

hi
you could also consider the option o travelling from bareilly to delhi by air-conditioned bus of UPSRTC...... look at the following links.......

Lucknow-Delhi Road... look at table#7

Hardoi-Delhi Road.look at table#3

however in both the routes bareilly is an inter mediate stop.........so check whether advance booking is permitted or not

also look at the page for Service Schedule/Time Table

Khak's sugestion and your notes about long taxi journeys got me thinking.

A taxi from Bareilly to Delhi (250Kms, 5-6 hours), then a flight or the overnight train (departing Nizamuddin at 19:00) to Udaipur- seems like a good option.

Taking it one step further....

A taxi from Bareilly to Udaipur...only joking.

However, a taxi from Bareilly to Mathura (200kms, 4-5 hours) then the overnight train (departing Mathura at 21:05) to Udaipur.

or stay in the taxi till Bharatpur (an additional 40kms), then relax in the Bird Sanctuary for a few hours, then the overnight train to Udaipur departs Bharatpur at 21:31. (There's a few cheap, laid back hotels -Rs2-300- near the entrance to the sanctuary, book in one for the afternoon so you can freshen up, and have a meal at about 19:30, it will help you and the kids relax for the train journey)

Taxi on roads in India, particularly in UP....not something I look forward to....but maybe things have changed in the last decade.

How much would an Innova (say, Bareilly-Mathura) cost? Guess they would charge me round trip (i.e 500km). How much do they charge per kilometer?

I agree, it's not my idea of fun either, but I bet the kids would enjoy it.

I've no idea about car costs, I'll leave that to a local, but I'm sure some contacts in Bareilly would get you a good price.

An interesting option that seems to fit your timings....

Train 5036 departs Rampur daily at 11:20 and gets to (Old) Delhi station at 15:20, the train has Air Con chair class.

Rampur is 60-65kms from Bareilly, and train 5036 only starts it's journey in Kathgodam, so should get to Delhi close to time.

You could take your kids on the Delhi metro from Delhi train station (Kashmir Gate metro station I think) to Central Secretariat, then get a taxi to Nizamuddin, I'm sure there are a few trains from Delhi station to Nizamuddin, but the Metro is fun and very cheap.

Now that sounds really promising....how did you figure this out? Is there a web site which shows trains stations in the proximity of Bareilly, or shows alternate routes?

Thanks. I might end up going this way....

I was just looking at options from Moradabad (a massive transport hub) and noticed the train, then a look at it's route, then a map....

Ahhh...the hard way...

I will use Google maps to see if I can come up with alternative plans, though what you suggest is an excellent option.

Thanks once again for all the help.
