Queries about 1AC overnight from Delhi to Jodhpur
Hey All,
I am travelling from Delhi to Jodhpur overnight in 1AC. I would be grateful if someone could answer the following, I apologise for the stupid questions!
- Which station at Delhi does it go from?
- I am scared of Cockroaches!! - how can I avoid or repel them??
- Should I take a face mask and some ear plugs to help me to sleep?
- Will it be cold with the air conditioning in June?
- Do I wear pyjamas? or do most people stay in their clothes
- Are the sheets / bedding you get usually very clean?
Thank you

1. For the first query, you need to mention the train name and number.
2. If its 1st class, it shouldn't be a problem. Still if you fear, you can carry a cockroach repellent spray.
3. Upto you.
4. They will provide you the blanket, bedsheet, pillow and towel. No need to carry anything.
5. Its a persoanl choice. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
6. Yes they usually are.
Besides, Welcome to Indiamike.

Agree with Roushan on all points, especially the sheets, they're super clean.
I found it useful to bring an inflatable pillow with me as the pillow they issue just ain't high enough for me. Inflatable pillows were only a couple of quid of eBay.
I've only each seen cockroaches on one train and they were small, nothing to worry about. They were on a train that had already been travelling for over a day before it reached us and someone had spilt food. Once we'd cleaned up the area they dispersed. This was in 3A, I've never seen any issues in 2A or 1A but that's just my experience.
My wife and I just slept in our clothes but our kids chose to sleep in pyjamas.
You shouldn't need a face mask at all, especially in 1A

IRI link indicates 1 HA coach, so total 10 berths in 1A (2 cabins with 4 berths each & 1 coupe with 2 berths). The general quota is only 6, btw.Yes, it will have curtains (even 2A & 3A do).
Can't really comment on how many "births", as that might depend on how many expectant mothers are on board

You saw a mouse, I once saw a Rat and a snake (just kidding, but did see a mouse and of couse cockroach). We live in a Eco-friendly country, even in 1AC. The IR pets love the cool temperatures during the summer. We need to cater to minorities.
Cheers

The sheet and blanket clean but scratchy.
Agree w/ Ocean T, the small provided pillow is just too flat. Folded a cardigan and placed that (it was winter)of top of it.
Like Drew, did not see a cockroach but did see mouse (ewwwww) in the compartment--saw rat in train station.(double ewwwww) Inevitable, as people eat, crumbs are everywhere, etc.
Each bunk had individual reading lights, if you can't sleep and want to pass time.
It was hard to sleep, but not noisy--just bloody cold!! (this was in January). Don't know about temp with but anticipate and have extra layer.
All occupants (4) slept in street clothes and outdoor clothes.
Depending on the arrival time to your station... tell someone--bunkmate, train official, etc--to make sure you are awake when you arrive. One lady slept through arrival and it took a search from her family to get her up!! She spoke no English and no one knew where her destination station was.
Look forward to the chai wallah coming round with hot tea in the morning in those little paper cups. Yum!!

Hmm mouse, rat, cockroach, stick insect, bed bugs....
In June you'll be glad of A/c and if it gets too cold you can request the carriage attendant to adjust the setting, but a local Indian will likely beat you too it

I used to buy those inflatable pillows at stations but they never seemed to last more than a couple of train journeys for some reason. In June you'll be glad of A/c and if it gets too cold you can request the carriage attendant to adjust the setting, but a local Indian will likely beat you too it

not sure what you mean by 'scratchy' - the linen in 1A is certainly washed well, mainly because it is patronised mostly by freeloaders (aka railway officials & politicians) who can make the life of the attendant miserable...reading lights are something available in 2A too (though in my last trip it did not work - complained to attendant, he came & checked & confirmed that it does not work & went off
). i have seen it in some 3A coaches too, but mostly they don't work. at least in 1A, i would expect them to work for sure.some occupants do choose to change into pyjama/kurta (typical night wear for north indians) - so they may request you to stay out for a few mins, which is quite reasonable.
in case 1A, the attendant surely wakes up the passenger when the train is in the outskirts of their destination (by knocking on the door & announcing) - so what you mentioned is a bit surprising. in case of 2A, they do this too, mostly because they need to collect the linen. in case of 3A, it may depend on the attendant, but if you request them to, they would oblige.

By "scratchy" i mean not soft or smooth--more of a fiber-y feel. I suppose that comes from being washed well.
Really? You are surprised that no one "surely" came to wake the lady? I guess this was the first and only error ever in the history of Indian Railways!!
Better safe then sorry...omissions/errors can and do occur everywhere.

On two of our 4 overnight trips earlier this year there was no morning call. In fact no sign of an attendant at all. Not even chai vendors. These were standard trains. Things were much sharper on the Rajdhani and Duronto that we travelled on.The train we took from Delhi Sarai Rohilla to Jodhpur (Rajasthan Sampark Kranti) was easily the dirtiest train that we travelled on - the bed linen was grey and the pillows were like concrete. We carry sleeping bag liners and needed them for this train.
We didn't see a cockroach in over 5,000km of train travel - just one mouse (in 2AC).
The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.
