printed train ticket

I booked my train tickets to India, and I have a print out of the confirmatino, seat number etc... Do I show this to the ticket office to get a ticket or do I just show ID when I board the train?

Also, on a overnight train ride, will the TTE wake me up to keep me from sleeping past the station where I am supposed to depart?

Did you book an E-ticket?

Wake you up? give details.

Class booked?
Where from and to?
What train?

Did u book an e-ticket? If yes then you do not need any other ticket. You can just boared the train with a valid identification. If you are not an Indian National then i believe only a passport will be a valid identification.

No Chance dude. You will have to keep an alarm to get up. By the way which train are you boarding? Where are you de-boarding and what time is the arrival at the station of de-boarding?

In terms of waking you up, it really depends on the TTE! I usually do ask them to check up on me incase I have overslept! Most of the time they do come around just before the station! Maybe I have just been luck and had good TTE's!

eticket

yes, I got the eticket, from cleartrip.com

It gives me the PNR, transaction ID and the cleartrip ID, and the coach number and seat.

I have a portable alarm clock so I guess I can use that to make sure I am woken up.

Yes, you should.

Most of us carry alarm clocks around with us in the form of phones and other gadgets... set them all!

...Although, on second thoughts, perhaps that would not be very kind to your travel companions

There are good reasons why we ask.

Arriving 04:30 at a big station, traveling in 1A or maybe 2A, then yes, they may wake you up.

Arriving at a small station at 03:00 travelling Sleeper Class, no chance.

In the higher classes you have carriage staff who are always looking for tips, so waking you is a good opportunity for them (if they're awake).

I always remember Pili Banger station when I read this type of question, that's the station I jumped off at when I asked the TTE if this is Bhatinda, he said yes.

(careful how you ask anything in India, I'm sure the TTE thought I was asking if the train went to Bhatinda)

an e-ticket (printout type) does need photo-identification to prove that the person travelling is the person whose name is on the ticket. So, carry passport/ driving license/ any other govt. issued ID with your name & photo on it.

Watch out for the pronunciation, too. If they are awake, and it is a major station, the train staff may walk down the carriage calling out the name --- but you have to listen carefully, or you might not understand it.

I have that trouble with the food vendors: I can never understand what they are selling. Once I see it, or my wife tells me, then only I know what they said!

It is alway good to put Alarm on and also tell fellow passengers who are departing on same station where you are.

Last week my cousin missed to wokeup at Vadodara station which is coming at 2AM and after 1.5 hours his parent called him and surprisingly he already crossed Godhara and had to got down at Ratlam station , TTE also charged panalty from Baroda to Ratlam station.

Regards
Rushi

train stops

thanks for the reponses.

It actually wont be as bad as I thought, since some of the trains terminate where I am disembarking, but the tough ones for me will be from Jaisalmer-Agra, getting off Agra at 0500, class 3A. I will be going first class with a friend from Delhi to Varanasi. I am assuming from the repsonses for first class, getting some help for the wake up (I think we will be arriving in Varanasi around 0700 hours) shouldnt be a problem, but I will have back-up in the form of an alarm clock.

What kind of staffers are on the train to help with passangers and other things of the sort? It sounds from the posts that there is more than just the TTE on board.

Finally, if a train is NOT a pantry-cart train, is the only food available at platforms? Will food venders arrive on trains during Shatobi (sp?) lines? What about on a regular train going say 3AC or CC?
