Question Price variation

Just booked 4 rail journeys with very little problem.
When I got a preview of the price it was not the same as the final price I paid. I am more than happy with the final price but does anyone know why the difference? ie what have I missed!!!

With thanks
Keith

Keith, you couldn't give less info if you tried.

What website did you use to book?
What journeys and what trains?
What was the preview price and the final price?

I don't know; at http://erail.in/ (not an official site), you could look up your trains; then click their train numbers; then click their fare prices in the schedule at lower end of page, to get a breakdown of fare make-up. (That info comes directly from the IRCTC site though I think.)

There will be some (like you say, minimal*) surcharges for reservations and type of train and such yes, so maybe that explains it. Not sure if those shouldn't have figured into your original quotes though. Apparently not, then.

* Although you now indicate a difference of hundreds of Rupees rather. Which does surprise me. Hm. I'm checking your Swatantra now, and like you I should think those Rs. 1835 should be it really. Steve, anyone?

Keith, the amount quoted was for single pax. The fare I believe that has been charged is for two. At the time of booking you had chosen the senior citizen discount option so that is why you got a discount. I am pretty sure that there's a female accompanying you who is of above 60 years. Indian railways gives 50% discount to females of above 60 years of age and 30% for males above 60 years of age.

If you take the actual fare for single pax on Swatantrta S Ex to New Delhi Varanasi Ist class AC, its 1835. So after discount/concession, for the female it's 1010 and for you it will be 1340, which totals to 2350.

I hope that my explanation was clear.

Just for the sake of documentation/clarity, the final charge** would be whatever amount you saw printed on the ticket + the following:

- IRCTC reservation charges (don't remember the logic now)
- Payment gateway charge (a small %age - 1.65/1.85 approx over the sum of the above)
- Your bank/credit card issuer charges, if any (generally a %age again)

** Amount that'll appear in your account/credit card as a debit

Thanks Coolsub - You are right - my wife who is accompanying me is over 60 and female.

As I said I was more than happy with the price but was curious about the difference.

Thanks again

Keith
