Two of us are travelling from Mumbai to Katni on the 26th of May. At the moment, we've booked two 1AC tickets and two 2AC tickets (for back-up).
The situation is:

PQWL 3 & 4 - 1AC

PQWL 10 & 11 - 2AC

I've checked a much later date for that train to see how many berths are available, but it seems unclear, although I think it's 4...? All I seem to understand about "Pooled Quota" is that is generally makes it more unlikely that you'll get a seat?

What I'm wondering is would it be a good idea to book a berth for the whole journey for more than we're currently paying. As it stands, it's Rs 4,538 for both of the 1AC tickets, Rs 2,696 for the 2AC tickets. To book for the whole journey, it would cost about Rs 6,500. The advantage that I can see is that we'd jump to WL1&2, and not PQWL (I think?).

We don't mind paying the extra if we need to, and we don't mind dropping a couple of classes to guarantee a seat, but we'd prefer to stay in 1AC if possible. Paying the extra for the full fare is something we wouldn't mind doing if it was worth it, but if it's not necessary obviously why throw away money.

Katni is in the middle of the journey, the train is the Kolkata Mail, departing Mumbai CST at 21.25 on the 26th of May. We have E-tickets.

Is waiting till just a few days before departure and purchasing a Taktal ticket worth it either?

I would extremely grateful if anyone could offer some advice. Apologies if a very similar question has already been answered, my poor forum-searching ability will be to blame.

The 2322 CSTM HWH Mail Via ALD carries an HA coach i.e. a composite 1A cum 2A coach - of which the 1A portion has 10 seats/berths.

Out of the 10 seats, 4 seats are part of HO quota - thereby leaving only 6 seats under General Quota. Out of these, 2 seats are ear-marked for JBP quota, where as the remaining 4 seats are under general quota from Mumbai to Howrah. Pl. see this:

Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
2322 KOLKATA MAIL 4-7-2010 MUMBAI CST JABALPUR GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - 1A Class -2A
1 4- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 16
2 5- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 6 AVAILABLE 6
3 6- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 6 AVAILABLE 18
4 7- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 6 AVAILABLE 18
5 8- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 2 AVAILABLE 18
6 9- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 6 AVAILABLE 17

Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
2322 KOLKATA MAIL 4-7-2010 MUMBAI CST KATNIGENERAL

S.No.Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - 1A Class -2A
1 4- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 2 AVAILABLE 12
2 5- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 WL 1/WL 1
3 6- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 12
4 7- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 12
5 8- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 2 AVAILABLE 12
6 9- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 11

Train Number Train Name Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Source Station Destination Station Quota Code
2322 KOLKATA MAIL 4-7-2010 MUMBAI CST HOWRAH JN GENERAL

S.No. Date (DD-MM-YYYY) Class - 1A Class -2A
1 4- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 2 AVAILABLE 13
2 5- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 RAC6/RAC 6
3 6- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 15
4 7- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 18
5 8- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 2 AVAILABLE 17
6 9- 7-2010 AVAILABLE 4 AVAILABLE 17

So even if you cancel your existing tickets and book fresh ones upto HWH, even though technically you'll move from WL3 to WL1 (PQ to GN) (PQ quota is for intermediate stations, while General is for end to end) the quota of seats remains those same 4 seats.

Therefore, in my view it doesn't make sense booking upto HWH and waste money.

Further, as the travel date approaches, cancellations tend to happen and this would reduce your WL.

If the HO quota remains unutilised upto the date of travel, then the same is released to General quota - which implies that your tickets would get confirmed even if there were no cancellations since there are 4 seats in HO quota and your WL 3&4.

Trust the above clears all doubts.

Thanks! Just wondering, if we booked the whole way and two people cancelled their tickets, wouldn't we get our seats? Whereas in our current situation, two cancellations would mean we wouldn't get our seats?

Also, is it likely/common that the HO quota isn't utilised? And does this train have a taktal quota?

Sorry about all these questions, just one last one: It would appear that our position has changed just slightly: My friend has moved to "WL 3" and I'm "PQWL 3" for the 1AC, and for the 2AC, she's moved to "WL 10" while I'm on "PQWL 10", what's the story with that?

Thanks so much for your reply!

Buying the tatkal tickets would be the best plan and please go to the station in person as online booking at * AM always is a hit and miss case. Another thought here....have you checked the foreign quota?

Yes, if you booked the whole way, your tickets would move to CNF if there were two cancellations. Thats certainly an advantage. However, Given that your booking is for 1A and that the quota available for both KTE and HWH are those very 4 seats, if I were you, I wouldn't book the whole way. Had it been 2A or 3A the situation would've been different.

Nevertheless, the option of booking the whole journey remains available.

HO quota in 1A is generally used when some high railway official or MLA / Minister is travelling. Other than that it is used by people having influence to get their WL tickets confirmed.

Generally, I've observed that HO quota is not used that frequently and is released to GN quota which gets utilised for clearing wait-lists. However, given that you'd be travelling during the summer holidays (which is a peak time on IR), the possibility of HO quota being utilised cannot be completely ruled out.

Regarding Tatkal quota, ALL trains across all classes except 1A have a tatkal quota. Tatkal bookings are not permitted in 1A.

Could you please provide some more information regarding your friend's journey? Is the position you're mentioning for the same train, same date, same journey (CSTM KTE)?

Tatkal tickets cannot be purchased for 1A. There is no Foreign Tourist (FT) quota by the 2322 CSTM HWH Mail in 1A.

However, there are 2 berths under the FT quota in 2A by the 2322 Mail for which Colman would have to purchase the tickets over the counter. Online bookings are not permitted for FT quota.

Yeah it's for the exact same journey, which is a bit odd I guess. Originally she was PQWL 4 and I was PQWL 3 for the 1AC and for the 2AC she was PQWL 11 and I was PQWL 10. Which I also found odd at the time as I put her as passenger 1 and myself as passenger 2 when booking. If it's relevant, both of these journeys were booked through cleartrip.com, rather than irctc.co.in.

But yeah, same train, same date, same class, same berth preference even.

Also, taktal is available for 2AC? So if a few days before the 26th we still hadn't been confirmed, we could book 2AC tickets through taktal? That's handy. And since we wouldn't be in India till the 24th, would you say that that's a better option than the tourist quota plan?

Thanks for the advice, I think I won't book tickets for the full journey now. Much appreciated!

Could you please provide the PNR No. of your booking(s). That'll clear the air about everything. Alternatively, you could log onto to www.indianrail.gov.in and check your current status by entering the PNR No.

Yes, tatkal is available for 2A. However, please note that tatkal bookings open TWO days prior to the date of the journey, excluding the date of departure. So in the instant case, for the journey on 26/5, the tatkal bookings would open at 8AM on 24/5.

Also please note that there are limited seats in Tatkal and they get booked in a matter of seconds!

The 2322 Mail has got 8 seats in 2A and 20 seats in 3A in tatkal quota for journey upto to KTE. The 8 2A seats are likely to be sold out by 8.01am. If your lucky, you could get confirmed tickets even after a few minutes have passed. However, for that it would be advisable to pourchase the tickets over the counter, as the IRCTC site just goes for a toss between 8AM and 8.20AM on account of the massive load.

If that doesn't work out, you could also try booking in the FT quota in 2A as the FT quota seldom gets utilised.

Unfortunately our flight doesn't get into Mumbai till 11.15 or so on the 24th... This rules out the possibility of Taktal I assume? And would that also rule out getting the FT quota? Oh dear.. What do you think our chances are of actually getting on this train...?

In this scenario, FT quota seems to be the best bet.

##I assume you would have booked your accomodation in a Hotel. Please send a request to your Hotel, where, if I am NOT wrong, there will also be a travel desk, to book Two Tatkal Tickets either in 3AC or 2AC for your journey from Mumbai to Katni. Please tell them NOT to take Waitlisted Tatkal Tickets.

##Also, please note a PQWL Ticket will always be in PQWL only, till such time it moves either into confirmed status (OR) gets dropped during Charting. It NEVER gets shifted to GNWL; and there won't by any RAC before PQWL commences!!!

Dear travel_lover_007,

##If the CSTM-KTE and CSTM-HWH Quota is "one and the same", why the CSTM-KTE Passenger will be placed in PQWL? :-)

##Assuming that it is HA1 coach, I only assume there will be 4 Berths in PQ and 4 Berths under GN and the remaining two for HO.
##However, exact position will be known only if somebody in Mumbai takes pains to go to Station and takes a look at the Final Chart before train's departure.

Dear Colman,

##One of our IRFCians, has reported the following:
-------
Hi folks,

I had railfanned at Mumbai CST on the night of 10th April 2010 i.e. on Saturday.
....
5. 2322 CSTM-HWH Mail via ALD and Gaya was on Pf-18. The HA-1 coach had very less occupants from Mumbai. Only 3 CSTM-KTE tickets and some from JBP.
