Dear Mr. Prasad,
Thank you so much for those information. Actually you see Sir, I am new in traveling by train and as a result I am not that familiar with it.
Please also tell me regarding the availability of foods inside my train.

Question Help with WL1

This will be our first time to India and I have online e-ticket purchased a AC1A ticket for my husband and from Udaipur to Delhi on 3 Jan 09.

My booking has been confirmed, I have one CONF the other is listed as WL1 - is it likely we will be able to travel together... or do I need to cancel and seek alternative?

Book 2-tier air con tickets (2A), there are still 7 remaining.

Do not cancel the 1A tickets yet.

I think there are 10 1A berths on that train, and only 8 berths are allocated to the general quota, the other 2 are kept back for 'unknown' quotas (unknown to us), these can be railway staff or politicians.

There's every chance that those 2 berths could be sold, maybe some politicians going to Udaipur to try their luck with some NYE drunken female tourists , but if these berths remain available, they will be used to reduce the waitlist and your waitlisted ticket will become confirmed, there's also a chance that one of the 7 confirmed ticket holders will cancel.

Wait till Jan 1st and then check the status of your 1A tickets to see if your waitlisted ticket has become confirmed, if not, go to Udaipur station and have a word with the station supervisor or the chief reservation clerk and ask them if you will be given one of the extra 1A berths. if not, then cancel the 1A berths (online), the cancellation charge is minimal, if your 1A ticket does become confirmed, just cancel the 2A tickets, but make sure you cancel on the 1st Jan.

It's really difficult to guess if there will be cancellations, this train should be popular with those headed to Udaipur for New Years Eve.

No chance.

49 people who bought an overpriced Tatkal ticket yesterday would need to cancel, all would lose their money, I just can't see that happening.

Hi Steven , once it happened that one of my friend bought a Tatkal ticket in W/L 28 just 7 hrs ago before journey in Prashanti express , from Bhubaneswar to Bangalore. His ticket got confirmed. Dont you think that Railways confirm tatakal tickets first and then start confirming genral quota tickets?

No, never.

Tatkal quota has it's own carriages, or part of carriage, and only when people in those seats cancel will a waitlisted Tatkal ticket move up the waitlist.

It's the same with the general quota, as people cancel, those holding general waitlisted tickets will move up the waitlist.

If all people in the general quota waitlist (and RAC) were given confirmed berths, then maybe Tatkal waitlist ticket holders would be given a berth in any remaining general quota berths, but that is very unlikely to happen, otherwise why did so many people buy Tatkal tickets, I assume it was because of a long general quota waitlist.

Then how come my friend whose status in Tatkal was W/L 28 even at the day of journey, got confirmed? His name appeared in the chart as well, that he has got a confirmed birth.

When there is a huge rush and about 200-250 ppl in Sleeper class are yet to cancel their waitlisted tickets,do railways add an extra coach?

Maybe that train has a lot of Tatkal quota in Sleeper Class, I've read of some trains having 3 or 4 carriages for Sleeper Class Tatkal, disgusting really and just a way for the railways to make more money.

I hope your ticket does get confirmed, but you asked for an opinion, and I very much doubt a Tatkal WL 49 will get confirmed.

Do you know how many extra sleeper class coaches can be provided in 2863 HWH-YPR express? Genrally a long route superfast train has 12 sleeper coaches right?

4 I think.

254 berths are there for the Tatkal quota, so that should be 4 extra carriages.

So you need 1 in 5 of those people to cancel before your ticket becomes confirmed.

Do you know now a days , railways have introduced one extra berth per 8 seater room. Now instead of 72, we have 81 berths per sleepr coach. This makes 4*81 = 324 tatkal seats, off which 254 are avaiable during booking.Still we are left we 70 seats. My question is, will those 70 seats be allotted to tatkal passengers or general quota passengers?

Are you saying that train 2863 now has side middle berths in the Tatkal Sleeper coaches?

So you got your ticket at a reduced price?

I've no idea if there would be any extra seats for certain quotas, and also no idea what will happen to those seats if they remain unsold.

Side middle berths are there in this train, for all sleeper coaches. However, the ticket price is the same.

I have a question, do railways issue extra coaches for tatkal, or do they have 20% of the seats available reserved for tatkal passengers?

The total # of sleeper coaches (excluding extras) is 12 which means 12*81 = 972 berths. Of which 254 are for tatkal and 450 are for general quota. This still makes 268 berths available. Isnt it?

Need your valuable idea on this.

The official number of Tatkal berths in Sleeper class is 10% of the total, or 1 carriage, but the railways got greedy and ignored this rule, thus robbing customers like yourelf the opportunity to buy general quota tickets.

I'm not sure of your numbers, I just look for availability in 10 (or anything over 6) days, and thats 254, and as no tickets can be sold before then, that must be the number they allocate to Sleeper Class Tatkal.
