This discussion thread is meant for Waitlist questions for the Indian Railways. If you do not know the meaning of Waitlist for Indian Trains, then please read this article that describes the concepts of Wait Lists (WL) and Reservations Against Cancellation (RAC).

Also, when requesting information on this thread, please post the following details of your travel:
  • Train Number
  • Date of Travel
  • Class of Travel
  • Departure Station
  • Destination Station
  • WL Status at booking
  • WL Status Current

If you know your PNR you can use this site to check your current status. http://www.indianrail.gov.in/pnr_Enq.html

Your ticket is confirmed, you will find out your carriage and berth number when the reservation chart is prepared (about 4 hours before train departs)

Interesting that first number was WL, then when you booked, first number was RAC, what train number, class and boarding station? (there's nothing wrong, just the first number should never change, and RAC or WL are still numbers)

Thanks Moon Guy.

I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen RAC/Available (instead of GNWL/Available), there isn't a problem, I'm just curious.

Enjoy your train trip, and congratulations on booking your first IRCTC train ticket, a lot easier said than done these days.

Check your PNR status after 11:00 on your travel date, then you'll find out what berth you have in carriage A1 (only 1 x 2A carriage).

Cheers, thanks for clarifying things for me

Now they have started mentioning RAC, NewWorld... During our recent travel I had seen several passengers carrying RAC tickets who had been allotted side lower berths.

I was wondering about the position in the queue......let me explain.

Assuming 4 RAC positions, then tickets are sold as follows.

Available 3
Available 2
Available 1
RAC 1
RAC 2
RAC 3
RAC 4
WL 1
WL 2
WL 3
and so on.

The 2 numbers on a waitlisted ticket represent the position you joined the waitlist, and your current position, so, WL 2/RAC 1 means you joined the waitlist at position 2, but because of cancellations, you are now at RAC 1.

The crucial point here is, the first position/number never changes, it's how you're identified, and how you find your carriage/berth on the reservation chart.

When Moon Guy searched for availability, he was offered GNWL/Available, but when he then bought a ticket it was RAC4/CNF.

This almost certainly means that RAC/Available is never shown, so I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen RAC/Available.

Hi smart people!

I have just booked a ticket from New Dehli to Varanasi for two people. One gets "CNF", but the other gets "RQWL 1 ". I have googeled and read fora about RQWL, but I just can't seem to get an answer what the hell this is.

My question is: is there a chance the person with RQWL will get refused entry with the train?
Or: Do you get to ride on the train, but the exact seat you will have is unsure yet.

Basically my question is: are we safe or not? I really hope you guys can answer this! The date of travel is 02-01-2018.

If at least one passenger’s status is confirmed (full berth) or RAC (half berth), then all passengers on this ticket are allowed to board the train even if some of them are in waitlisted status. So the second passenger can board the train in your case.

Really? I read online that that is not a official rule at all ...

I used to think the same (online purchased ticket automatically cancelled), but the rules have changed.

I'm wondering why you're seeing RQWL, it's rare, and not really applicable between Delhi and Varanasi.

Assuming you've booked between a Delhi station and a Varanasi/Mughal Sarai station (sometimes it's worth booking the journey to start before Delhi, then change the boarding station, and sometimes it's worth booking to a station after Varanasi, just to find availability), and if your train departs on 2nd. Jan, then it's likely you've booked train 12402 (2A or 3A), if this is the case, your ticket should be PQWL 1, (you'll find plenty of berths available if you book Delhi to Patna), there's an outside chance you could have booked train 12274 (1A), but then the ticket should be GNWL 1.

Hi!

First of all: thank you for responding!

But no, I didn't book 12402. I booked train 12236 / NDLS DBRG RJDHN, First AC. From NEW DELHI (NDLS) to VARANASI JN (BSB). 09:25 - 22:15.

It is still giving me RQWL. I thought it was best to just buy a 3A ticket for the 2nd passenger (RQWL-guy), but that failed (maybe it's not accepted in system to buy 2 tickets on same name / paspoort-number?).

Don't worry, Next from RAC is CNF and your ticket have 99.99% chances of CNF.
