This discussion thread is meant for Waitlist questions for the Indian Railways. If you do not know the meaning of Waitlist for Indian Trains, then please read this article that describes the concepts of Wait Lists (WL) and Reservations Against Cancellation (RAC).

Also, when requesting information on this thread, please post the following details of your travel:
  • Train Number
  • Date of Travel
  • Class of Travel
  • Departure Station
  • Destination Station
  • WL Status at booking
  • WL Status Current

If you know your PNR you can use this site to check your current status. http://www.indianrail.gov.in/pnr_Enq.html

Hi everyone, need a bit of your help . I am travelling from rou to pune.Generally I prefer to travel more in sitting position as I suffer from spinal ankylosing spondylitis, But unfortunately while booking the seat was not available. So I also Booked an AC 3A ticket . So now I have ended with 2 tickets for single person for a single journey.pls advise me which one to get cancelled or else the cancellation charge might be levied on me.

Option 1:
pnr no: 6308438344

Train Name: Azad Hind Express
Train no: 12130
Rou to Pune

Date of travel: 18/04/2012
Current status: W/L 1 : General quota
Booking Status: W/L 12
Class: 2A

Kindly help me decide If this ticket will get confirmed or should I get it cancelled?
Also in the same train for the same journey I have another Ticket in AC 3 with the following details:

Option 2
Rou to Pune
pnr: 660-0592089
Date: 18/04/2012
Class: 3A:General quota
Booking status : RAC 2
Current status : CNF

So can anyone find out what seat they will allot me? Will it be a side seat(Passage) or inside seat?Any way to find that out? The train leaves kolkata station tonight.

First of all, thank you for opening this thread.

I have booked my ticket from jammu tawi till Bandra,Mumbai on swaraj express.

The waiting list today was 96 in sleeper class.96 ON the date 17/4/2012.

There are almost 2 months n 15 days remaining for the journey. The ticket is booked for 4/7/2012.

Do you think,i will get an confirmed ticket by then?

What are my chances of getting an RAC TICKET?

In the end you managed to get a side-lower berth. I hope that was what you were looking for? Have a pleasant journey

Ahh, your date of journey is too far away to be able to predict accurately! A combination of a high WL and a far-off journey date is difficult to predict, but given that you have over 70 days for your journey, I'd say RAC is a good chance. A confirmed ticket, I'm not that sure.

Thanks in advance to all.
A WL number of 90+ is rarely promising. This train has 10 3A coaches, though, which is your only hope - many coaches, and being on the General Waitlist. However, if I were you, I'd try for Tatkal.

Which class are you travelling by? However the WL numbers look promising, you should get RAC almost definitely, and in all probability confirmed tickets. But without the class of travel, an accurate prediction is difficult.

We got on the outbound train with one confirmed and one WL/1. I was very nervous about this, as I thought we could get thrown off --- but the TTE allowed us to share one berth, finding us another after a couple of hours of playing sardines. Of course, if we'd been a honeymoon couple... !

Return journey was RAC at time of charting, so no qualms about getting on the train. The TTE worked very hard at accommodating us and the other RAC passengers, which he was eventually able to do. He was coming under great pressure, and told one WL passenger to get out of the train and go to a general compartment. These guys do not have an easy job every day!

We had not realised the dates of Kerala New Year: many were travelling home after celebrating. As locals, we should have known better!

It's really good to know, Nick, that you didn't have to cancel your trip.

Nick

Good to hear that you had no problems but your account does highlight how difficult it is to predict Waitlist outcomes. At the end of the day it seems to be dependent on the TTE and whether he is prepared to help or not.

Dear Param,
....the waitlist on mandovi exp to Goa has not moved at all for my parents & self.
Need your advise on Tatkal...
1. Would an Trvl Agent have a better possibility of this requirement of 2 senior citizen tkts by TATKAL or Should I go myself to the counter personally..??
2. If I go myself, should I book their tkts with filling seperate Reservation forms so that book bookings are seperate where they can be allotted seperate Lower berths..?? OR... Will 1 Reservation form do..??
3. Is the Tatkal Reservation form the same as the Normal Reservation form available at the counter or is it different for Tatkal..??
4. Since there is also Reservation being done at my local satation...do you suggest I go HERE ITSELF or Do you suggest that I go to CSTM for this Tatkal resrevation..?? Basically does CST have a bigger quota versus Local stations..??
5. What are the chances of getting Tatkal in 2A..??...or should I try any other class....they basically need AC.

This is only HALF my worry -- ie.For my parents......but then comes my own travel with family (4 persons - including Baby) on May 13th....which again has not moved at all....there again will need to go for Tatkal I think...??

Dear Param Sir,
Awaiting your advise on the my tatkal query....Pls help..!!

For the Andaman Express, it looks like there are a total of 91 berths allocated for this sector, which means at least 25% of the confirmed passengers will have to cancel their tickets for your ticket to get confirmed/RAC. There are only 6 Sleeper Class coaches in this train, so overall capacity itself is not high.

Wrt Swaraj, your tickets are in a much better position. With a WL of 10-11, (and a total quota of around 115 berths), expecting 10% cancellations for an RAC ticket is quite likely, and I think with the amount of time you have, a confirmed ticket is fairly feasible. But there's still a lot of time, and it all depends on your ticket's movement in the coming months.

Yet another option is the Malwa Express, which has WL20 in Sleeper for your date - with a total quota of 176 berths, you stand a good chance of confirmation.

2AC is always dicey. Tatkal WL 1 has a very good chance of getting confirmed, however there are instances of it remaining WL. Your ticket, if it gets confirmed, will probably do so only when the train's chart is prepared.

I am not Param Sir, but I think I can help you with your queries.

(1) There is no separate quota for senior citizens within the tatkal quota. If you manage to get your tickets early enough, you will be able to get lower berths. Remember that agents cannot book tickets online between 8-10 am, so unless you're sure your agent is competent enough to have his assistant first in line at the booking counter, there is little advantage in using one.

(2) As mentioned earlier, you are confusing the lower berth quota with the tatkal quota. It will make no difference whatsoever if you fill one form or two, in fact, two forms would be a problem as they will take longer to be processed, and by this time, all the lower berths will probably be sold.

(3) There is no difference in the reservation forms for the two. You will have to write "Tatkal" at the top of the reservation form, so that the clerk knows that you want a tatkal ticket and not a general ticket. Also, if booking tatkal tickets at a counter, you need to also provide a self-attested photocopy of the ID proof of any one of the passengers travelling on the ticket.

(4) It makes no difference where you book your ticket from - all booking offices will have access to the same quota (Unless you want tickets under the foreign tourist quota)

(5) Go for 3AC over 2AC, unless you specifically want 2AC for some reason. There are only 15 2AC berths available under tatkal, whereas 64 3AC berths are available.

Wrt your other booking, wait till around the 10th of May. The status then will be more reliable for you (and us) to gauge whether you need to opt for tatkal bookings or not.

Your PNR should be ten digits long. Ideally, if you can post the following information, it will make it much easier for members to quickly provide better predictions:

(From - To)
(Date of Journey)
(Train)
(Class of Travel)
(Booking WL and Current WL)
