What Class?
I know what class, but won't reply till it's mentioned, it's the only way I can tranfer the frustration I feel when members (almost always Indian) leave out the most important information.
And I must go to work in 5 minutes.

Myarco-
It is 11PM in India now... Your train leaves tomorrow morning at 06:30AM !!
So i don't even know if you'll read this... still here goes...
There are very slim chances of your current tatkal ticket getting confirmed... Tatkal passengers pay additional fare and book 5 days in advance... Only 3 confirmed tatkal passengers have cancelled in 4 days... Chances of 25 more cancellation by tomorrow are very little...
The reservation chart is prepared 4 hrs in advance (i.e. 02:30AM in your case).
Here is another option if your travel is urgent and the ticket is not confirmed tomorrow morning...
a) Reach Ahmedabad station early... to check your chart and to book 2/3 more tickets for the alternate plan...
b) Book Ahmedabad-Mumbai ticket at the station tomorrow early morning... Train#9018 (Gujrat express)... This has 2nd sitting and has availability... You can just buy the 2nd class ticket from the station and board and pay the reservation charges to the TTE... This train is at 7AM (just after your current train) and you should be able to catch this train. Make sure you get down at Dadar (arrival at 4PM)
c) At the Ahmedabad station reservation office before you leave, book two tickets from Mumbai to Chennai... Train#2163 which leaves Dadar at 8:30PM (it has WL#32 right now... reasonable chance of getting an RAC)... Train#1027 which leaves Dadar at 11:48PM... this train has RAC right now so you will get a seat... If the 1st train is not confirmed at 8:30PM, cancel that ticket and board the next one and vice-versa...
You should reach Chennai at 7:45PM on 9th (or 5AM on 10th if train#2163 is not confirmed at Mumbai)
Hope this helps...

I had a quick look to see if there was an alternative train from Roorkee (as you've got a poor arrival time), but there wasn't a well timed train. (though there is a Laksar-Dhanbad train departing Laksar 07.25 DHN 10.13, Laksar is about 25kms from Haridwar)I tried to have a look at other options for your train, but the Indian Railway computer has gone to sleep for the night.
I was thinking of the following....
Is your Haridwar-Dhanbad ticket on the general quota? (if not, getting all tickets confirmed may be difficult)
If your ticket isn't a general quota ticket, Would a Haridwar-Howrah or Dehra Dun-Dhanbad ticket be on the general quota? (Dehra Dun-Howrah would be on the general quota)
There's also often some good options if you change trains at Moradabad or Lucknow (trains coming from Delhi), but it's no use looking for options when I can't check availability.

That's the same train, same dates, same stations, same class, have you made a mistake, or are you not telling us something? Steven nothing like that.
firstly we are total of 7 members. out of which 3 are old aged. hence, changing trains would not be possible i belive after the tiring and hectic trip to chardham trek of 10 days.
first i booked for 6 tickets. then there were some other plans and the 7th member also wants to travel back along with us.
so nothing, i am hiding. and yes all 6 are general quota

It seems like the same train Steve...
Keshav- Are you planning to add another member to your ticket?
i suggest that you look at the next one week's status on the same train and see how many WL were confirmed (i.e. WL50/22 would mean that WL moved forward 28 positions)... Using this as a gauge, you can guess whether your ticket will be confirmed or not... In this particular case there is a good chance that your WL will get confirmed even if you book tomorrow.

I can understand your thinking, but it doesn't always work like that, for example.....The person who purchased the WL 21 ticket may have booked a WL 21/WL 21 ticket, then another 28 people could have purchased tickets and all cancelled, and whilst there would be 28 cancellations, the WL 21 ticket wouldn't move any closer to the front of the queue.
In reality, maybe 10-15 of those cancellations would be from confirmed (or low WL) ticket holders, but the rest may be high waitlist ticket holders.
Hey Steve - Slightly related to this topic...
If a confirmed passenger cancels his general quota ticket on a train (which also has RAC allotments), shouldn't the WL move forward by 2 for every cancellation... b'cos every cancellation gives one RAC passenger a berth and the other passenger gets the berth he/she was supposed to share with that other RAC...
i.e.
Originally train has RAC 1-100, WL 1-100
One confirmed passenger cancels...
New Status:
RAC 1 becomes confirmed
RAC 2 becomes confirmed
RAC 3-100 are now RAC 1-98
WL 1 becomes RAC99
WL 2 becomes RAC100
WL 3-100 are now WL 1-98
Is the above logic correct...
