Hello fellow indiamike’s, I went to see the doctor today and received some terrible news that could see me pulling away from indiamike, I've got an extremely rare form of tourettes cyber syndrome.
It seems that whenever I meet an Indian online I start typing/shouting things, and I can't stop myself, it's becoming embarrassing and there's a danger this could start creeping into my off-line life, I only ever shout 2 words, but I'm still very worried.
I realised the problem was becoming serious when I went to my local newsagent yesterday and was served by a charming Gujarati man, I really wanted to ask him where his family were from, or simply ask for a newspaper, but the only words that would come out of my mouth were "What Class, What Class?", the poor man thought I was mad and banned me from his shop.
Do any indiamike’s know a way I can overcome this problem?

Do you get the "what class?" attacks in the middle of the night too? Do they suddenly jump into normal conversation like during the interview you just had?
We have WL reservations for one train and confirmed reservations for a later train (if first choice doesn't clear W/L). How long, generally, should we wait to clear waitlist before we cancel W/L reservations? I mean, even you are W/L1, is it worth going all the way to the station? Indrail states you must cancel at least 4 hours before train departure in order to receive no penalty refund.
Thanks.
Thanks.

What do you mean in the above line? You should always cancel no later than 24 hours in advance of the train's departure time.

Stephen,(ie)you are listed as W/L1, or W/L3, etc. on a train leaving at 21:00 on Fri. Today is Wed. At what point do you give up waiting to clear waitlist and apply for a refund? 24hrs prior to departure? Thx again your prompt reply.
Richard
As per the quote, I meant, should you go to the train station anyway, hoping to clear waitlist in the final hours prior to departure. Sorry I misspelled your name, Steven.

Steven - I went to the doctor today and she told me I have a case of "sympathetic tourettes cyber syndrome". I see a post like the one above your's and before I even get to your post (or even realise you have posted) I find myself yelling "WHAT B***** CLASS?".

You can check via the Indian Railways PNR page or by telephone, read on.The reservation charts are prepared 2-4 hours before the train departs from it's originating station*, but if the train has a morning departure time, the reservation chart will be prepared the night before, normally before 18:00.
*Most Long distance trains have a quota (seats/berths) reserved for people boarding at a main station along the route, this will be called a remote location quota and this station will prepare it's own reservation chart 2-4 hours before the train departs from their station, for example, the Jodhpur-Varanasi express has remote location quotas for Jaipur and Agra Fort.
I can't seem to get onto the main Indian Raiway website this morning, they have a 'PNR' page to check on the current status of your ticket, when the reservation chart is prepared you can check to see if your ticket got confirmed, you can check on-line via the Indian railways PNR page or go via http://www.erail.in/ (Look for 'Get PNR Status' halfway down the page), or you can call 139 (from a landline) to get your current status.
Hi guys,
I am travelling in train for first time. My ticket from Bandra terminus to Falna ( Ranakpur express) is confirmed but my return from FA to Bandra terminus (suryanagri express) is not yet confirmed. It is on waiting list (Booking Status: W/L32 ,33,34,35 and current status is W/L15, W/L16, W/L17, W/L18)and 2AC tier. The date of travel is 14th March 2009. Am tensed what to do as am travelling with my parents and dont want any hitch on the last moment. Please suggest me further course of action. Am afraid incase i need to cancel the ticket for this train and book ticket for some other train for same date will i get my refund on time. I will be very grateful if you could advise me what should i do other than praying for my tickets to get confirmed.

WL5/WL2, is this one ticket, or is this WL5-WL4-WL3-WL2 (your 4 tickets).I've just checked on the website and the next ticket available is WL 9/WL 6, so I will assume one of your tickets is WL5/WL2, thus making your 4th ticket WL8/WL5.
It's difficult to tell, but you need a back up plan just in case.
There seems to be about 30 berths allocated for this sector, so you need cancellations from those people, the problem is, you need 11 cancellations* for all 4 people to get confirmed berths, this may not happen, but you never know. (*there's 6 RAC seats)
Don't cancel your tickets till a day before the journey, you just never know what can happen, but do consider an alternative.
I'll also assume you want to take the toy train to Darjeeling, so need a train that will arrive at New Jalpaiguri in time for this train.
Train 3147, Sealdah 19.35, New Jalpaiguri 07.00, has availability (5) in 2A, but there's a chance that you won't be seated together, though you are all likely to be in the same carriage.
(you're also unlikely to be seated together on the Darjeeling Mail, and there's one and a half 2A carriages on that train).
Another alternative that's cheap and gets you a little more time in Kolkatta.
Train 2517 (Garib Rath), departs Kolkata* station at 21.40 and gets to New Jalpaiguri at 07.40, there is LOADS of availability (427) in 3-tier air con, so you will all be seated together.
*Not Howrah or Sealdah, the station is known locally as Chitpur I think, it's in the centre of Kolkata.
The Darjeeling Mail (2A) will cost Rs926, but 3A in 2517 will cost Rs449, a big difference, but the carriages in 2517 have been redesigned to accommodate more people, though they're still perfectly comfortable, for more details of this kind of train (It's called a Garib Rath) see posts 311, 319, 320 and 321 in this thread.
If you do book the Garib Rath, select 2 x UB and 2 x LB (Upper and lower berths) as the side berths are a bit shorter.
I purchased e-tickets in tatkal with a wait-listed status from 19 to 30 on 10th Mar 2009 from 'Mettupalayam' to 'Chennai Central' in Niligiris Express.
* What are the chances for me to get a confirmed ticket?
* Is WL tatkal tickets are the one that are given preference first?
* If I cancel the waitlisted tatkal e-ticket 24 hrs before the journey what will be the exact amount that will be refunded(if at all)?
Per ticket cost is 410
Hope someone helps me...
Thanks to all the guys out there

Try reading, and then try being human, we are not your slaves.Maybe 20-30 times in this thread I've asked for people to state the class their tickets are booked in, it beggars belief that I have to keep asking this, and it's almost exclusively Indian members that don't mention the class, and they should know better.
Yes, I can work out your class by the fare quoted, but why should I?
If you mention the class, other members may help you, I won't as you broke a golden rule for me, 2 members spent time replying to your other thread, and you didn't have the decency to reply to let them know you'd even read their replies, this results in members feeling they have wasted their time, and they're then reluctant to do similar replies.
