online e-ticket not valid if waitlisted
I am posting this here just so it will catch the maximum number of eyes.
I had a miserable day traveling from Chennai to Bangalore this sunday. Since my online e-ticket booked from www.irctc.co.in was waitlisted and not confirmed, I could not even board the train!! The T.T.E explained to me that it was not not valid for even travelling in the unreserved compartment. I had to rush to the current ticket booking queue and in the delay missed two trains in the process. The TTE claimed that a ticket printed and obtained from a railway booking office was valid for travelling in unreserved coach even if waitlisted but not an e-ticket.
Hope this will prepare travellers in advance - esp those thinking they will confirm the reservation in the last minute on wait-listed e-tickets.

you are right gobbledegeek.. we are mentioning this in all our posts to highlight travellers that with waitlisted e-tickets you cannot even enter into the train. the refund gets automatically credited to your bank / credit card account.

Sigh! In all my browsing, I somehow missed this detail. The irctc website is not allowing me to cancel citing the fact that the chart is already prepared. I am awaiting most eagerly, a response to my indignant protestations submitted via the modern electronic medium !!

Damien,
If you are in the UK and you wanted a value ticket, I am sure that you would spend time before the computer trying to squeeze a good fare out by having a look around. People do it while going to the continent and to the US. What applies there also applies here.
It is not always about having practical knowledge of travelling, but some armchair research. You are right about the weekend. Do not strain yourself by going to the counter, sit in front of a fast computer and go for the tatkal. If you can't get the rath, have the indianrail map before you and go for gondwana, If tatkal vamooses then go for the varanasi sector trains with one change at itarsi.
It's only a few hours more by the other route.
Good luck with your tatkal endevours.
Kind Regards

The Waitlisted Ticket has WL clearly highlighted on the header row. Also, go through the points written in the ticket itself about the fully waitlisted ticket.
You should get refund automatically by friday.

The current waitlist position is 137.. If you are waitlisted 43, the chances of your ticket getting confirmed is better as generally more waitlists are confirmed..
On the bribe option, it all depends on the TTE.. You need to take a chance.. there is no "rate list" for that..
In case your e-ticket is not confirmed after charting (I feel you would atleast move to RAC), then buy an unreserved ticket and try your luck - with the paper ticket, you will be treated as a ticketless passenger.
We are 4 passengers booked for the 618 MNGLA LKSDP EXP from Thivim to ERANAKULAM JN for this Sunday, 11 October.
I bought the tickets 6 weeks ago (2AC) and we are (still) on WL 1-4.
What is the likelihood of these getting confirmed as the trip is 3 days away?
Thanks!!

VSP,
What I saw was even RN and MAO have quotas different from Thivam. Does it mean that Thivam has a separate quota ?

Methister,
First of all do not take it for granted that the tte will accept your bribe. You may eb showered with filthy abuses and the railway poilice may take you away in the worst case. If a ticketing squad is in service then you are doomed and can even be jailed. Do you want all that trouble and that comment educated people tch tch tch! Don't take the chance. You have the internet, search around and you will find a train.
I do not think compromising on integrity and honesty is a good idea for a train ticket. It's not the railways fault that the passenger did not book early knowing fully well that people have holidays. There are plenty of trains to jaipur and other options available as well with a change at bayana or agra from where it is a short ride. This is a general piece of good hearted advice. Never resort to underhand means especially if you are new to the country. It may backfire miserably on you. These days 100 or 200 rupees is nothing for a tte. You can always buy a ticket by a confirmed train.
