Palace on Wheels
Does anyone know what the price would be for three people to travel 3 days on the Palace on Wheels through Rajasthan? I was trying to look up the prices on the net, but most of the price quotations are from travel companies and the officíal site charges $1.900 and up! compared to around $ 250 on several other sites...

i think the $250 on the other sites will be the daily amount you will pay per person.
can you do only 3 days or do you have to book up for the full 7/8 days?
i jumped on it in Jaipur station last year to have a look around and it is sheer class, the very best way to travel if you have the money and only a short time in Rajasthan.
however, you only get to see a limited number of places for a very short time.
also, the only indians passengers will see/speak to will be touts in the main tourist destinations, i would not be surprised if they come away with a negative view of india.

I have just read a very good journal about the 'Palace on Wheels', anyone considering taking this train should check on this link.
The itinerary should change a little soon, the broad-gauge line being laid between Udaipur and Chittaurgarh should be finished sometime this winter, this will give a direct link (via Bundi) to Kota (and on to Delhi), I am sure the train will then use this line.
I'm not sure what kind of life the author of the journal leads, he made a wonderful comment when describing Indian trains, he explained how someone...
"….. had a thoroughly unpleasant experience, forced to share a sleeping compartment with strangers, on her overnight connecting train back to Delhi."
Bless him; perhaps he isn't ready for Mumbai's suburban trains in the rush hour.

Well, I suspect anyone travelling on the Palace on Wheels (what is it, US$350 a day or something) is not living the same life I'm living. They might not even be on the same planet!

My god how awful!!! sharing a compartment with strangers. Takes me back to a documentary I saw about 5 star tourists in India.
They were on camera berating the tour leader because the tour bus had driven through a "poor area" of Delhi on it's way to Agra.
They reckoned since they had paid so much for their tour that they should'nt have see this kind of thing!!!
Ah it takes all sorts eh!!!

Those are the folks who say to us: "I don't know how you can stand being around all those poor people and beggars and everything."
They so totally miss the beauty...
