##
##
Note:
1) Kindly check for availability against Lower Berth quota against the preferred train/class/date of journey through the official website/Indiarailinfo/Erail or any other website you may prefer.
2) Make sure the booking against the General Quota is not restricted, i.e. the status against the same has not moved to Regret else you would be unable to make any bookings and have to wait till cancellation happens and booking resumes against the General Quota. (One trick to avoid such situation is to try "Quick Book")
##
##
To add, female above 45 years can avail the same Senior Citizen Quota (Guaranteed Lower Berth-Subject to availability)
Follow the same instructions as given above. Kindly do not click again the "Senior Citizen Concession".
Make sure the lady travels alone.
##
##
In case of pregnant women, one has to take medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner and produce the same at the counter to avail the Senior Citizen Quota. (Without any concession).
There is no guarantee that if you book the lower berths against the Senior Citizen Quota online or through counter even (Book two separate tickets) then you would get adjacent berths or even at the same coach. (Unless and until the said train comprises of only one coach of the concerned class)
##
##
Kindly note that there are only 2 such Lower Berths available allotted to this concerned quota for every individual coach.
That is, if there are 10 Sleeper Coaches, the total allocation to Lower Berth Quota (ARP Status) would be (10*2=20)

Excellent writeup!
Few inputs:
- SS quota runs independent of GN quota. So even if GN moves to REGRET, berths may be available in SS quota. But as you pointed out, you can't even click on book since it shows REGRET. I think this is an oversight in program logic
- My experience is that these 2 berths are in the same compartment & 'mostly' closer to the entry/exit. So, if you have even seats available, the chances are 'very high' that next 2 bookings will be together. However, if seats available are odd number, you are assured of splitting across coaches. In that case, you have to book 3 & cancel the first one (after 3rd booking).
- in coaches with 1/2 2A or 3A, each of them get 2 berths assigned to SS quota
- 1A & FC does not have SS quota, but during charting, it is highly likely that elder persons will be given the LB.

Incidentally I'm a senior citizen. In fact, I had passed that prescribed age limit long time back! The thread must be very educative and I reckon this one is mainly posted for the benefit of such railway users who come under the category of senior citizens. But, I'm sorry to say that to me it looked very technical and I had serious difficulty in apprehending the procedure. May be I'm less knowledgeable than others, but can I request our experts to explain the issue little explicitly so that people like me understand the issue? Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

Sir,
- Just book the tickets the same way you do today (at the counter, i-tkt or e-tkt).
- Just check availability in 'Lower Berth or SS' quota (or IR or erail) along with 'General' quota
- If you have availability in SS quota, book one ticket with one passenger only (easier online as in the queue you cannot submit 2 requests as an ordinary citizen).
- Voila! Instead of WL, you will get a confirmed LB...

What I understood is: if I wish to book only LB, then first I should check availability of LB quota (in Quota drop down menu, this particular category is a new addition?) and then, if found available, I should book one person at time. This person has to be a senior citizen. Is this correct? Now, why one person at a time? The reason why I ask this question is both me and my wife are senior citizens and we both need LB and obviously wish to travel together. But if I book our tickets against LB quota, then I need to book 1 at a time which means we may get birth far away from each other! Is this correct? If so, what is the solution? In this connection I concede that I didn't know that there is a category called LB Quota and that one can see beforehand whether LB is available or not. Thanks for guidance.

Sir,
- you can check availability using drop-down in IR or erail. hoewever this drop-down is not relevant in irctc - there you choose general as usual
- this quota kicks in only for male 60 yrs or female 45 yrs - if traveling ALONE - so male would be srctzn & female may not be...
- when making the booking, you'll see availability against this quota (before you click make payment) - even if the GN quota is WL/RAC or does not have LB available
- there are 2 berths in each coach & they are 'almost' always in the same compartment (usually 1/4 in sl/3a & 1/3 in 2a).
- if the availability in LB shows even number, chances are very high that you will get 2 berths together. if it is odd number, you will get them split across coaches.

Hope this is not increasing the confusion causes

1) What exactly you want to claim? Senior Citizen concession or Confirmed Lower Berth?
2) Is your aunt the sister of your mother? In other words is she the daughter of your grand mother?

1. If you mean claiming concession for senior citizen, then it should have been given automatically based on age of your aunt.

2. You mean replace your Grandmother instead of your aunt. I am assuming both are senior citizens. The railways allows a ticket holder to replace another family members, but my experience has not been good recently. A ticket on my name was refused to be transferred to my brother.

1) If your aunt is a senior citizen and while booking correct age has been entered, there is no way she has not availed senior citizen concession.
2) Submit a written application to the CRS/SM with a copy of the ticket and photo identity proof of your aunt showing your grand mother as "her" mother atleast 24 hours prior to the departure of the train from your boarding point and/or 24 hours prior to charting.
