odds on train waiting list
odds on train waiting list
I booked i-tickets for myself and my wife on the North East from New Jalpaiguri to Varanasi for November 1.
One of us is confirmed, the other WL1.
How good are the odds of the other seat coming through? By when?
Ever grateful for the wonderful response I have recieved on other questions,
Dan

Dan, any time that I've been waitlisted I just show up. Haven't been denied yet. Have a great trip. Scott

I know what you mean Darmabum but that is not exactly a science you've just quoted, there ARE lots of seats that don't get confirmed, it's happened to me several times!!
Anyway to the OP which class are you booked in, in pretty much any class, EXCEPT 1st AC, No 1 on the waiting list stands a excellent chance of being confirmed, in 3 tier AC and Ordinary sleeper it's pretty much a sure bet and 2 tier AC is not far behind.
So unless your booked in 1st AC, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it you will most likely get confirmed!!

I think waiting list 1 & 2 in first class AC means that you have a berth but the chart is not yet made up for the train, so your berth number hasn't been allocated yet. Sorry for the confusion I'd forgotten the first class AC rules are a bit different!! Other "experts" will I'm sure put you straight on this!!
As for checking when your ticket has been confirmed, well at number 1 in 2AC it could get confirmed any day before your departure date!!
You can check the status of your waiting listed online at The Indian Railways Webite
Top left, next to the logo, entitled passenger/PNR status, enter your 10 digit number or PNR number (it will be on your printout from your online booking) then ask for status!!
I would say you've a 99% chance of the ticket being confirmed!
As for your First Class AC tickets well I'll let the real gurus here deal with that one!!

The code for "waitlist" is RC which stands for Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC). Pretty much means what it states. You will get confirmed if some one cancels.
In some clases, you are always guaranteed a seat, but waitlisted for a berth. Which means, you will be allowed on the train with your ticket.
There are other quotas like EQ (Emergency Quotas) that are released a few hours before the train departs. I am not sure if these quotas exist on all classes. So with waitlist of 1 you are almost guaranteed a berth, atleast in 2nd class. The TTE's also may game the system and release these seats to baksheesh payers. so, I would turn up early and track the TTE down soo that he does not give your berth off to someone else.

Personally, I wouldn't take a waitlisted 1AC ticket for the following reasons....1, there are very few 1AC berths on most trains.
2, most of the reasons a waitlist comes tumbling down, don’t come into play in 1AC.
On the plus side.....I don’t think RAC tickets are given for 1AC (Though I could easily be wrong), so 2 cancellations would get you 2 berths.
CNF = confirmed (berths)
RAC = Reserved against cancellation...RAC1 would become confirmed if there was a 'CNF' cancellation, RAC2 would then move to RAC1 and so on.
WL = waitlisted, WL1 would become an RAC ticket if a CNF ticket got cancelled.
There can be any number of RAC tickets issued, depending on class of travel and number of carriages with that particular class, EG. I think Sleeper Class has 4 RAC tickets issued for each carriage, and there can be 12 or more Sleeper Carriages on some trains.
If RAC tickets are issued for 1AC, I doubt there would be more than 2 issued per carriage, and I doubt there are many trains with more than 1 carriage of 1AC.
An RAC ticket holder can board a train, he will be given a seat (one berth becomes 2 seats) until a berth becomes available, if a berth doesn't become available, the ticket holder will have to sit for the duration of the journey.
