These late arrival times are o.k. in big cities though - there is always transport, taxis, autorickshaws generally available then.
Steven - a couple of times with train internet bookings before my card finally got to go, I made mistakes with dates and thought, phew, just as well I didn't get that ticket - I would have had to cancel and start all over again. Lucky your friend hadn't done the booking!
With internet booking it's really important to go slowly and accurately and get the dates right!!

I made my e-Reservation - Axis gateway option

MUMBAI CST - MADGAON MAO -AC 3
NOV. 28th - 0111 KONKAN KANYA EX - 23:05 - THVM 9:20 or KARMALI 9:40
My booking status is RAC 22 - and my current status is RAC 9

unfortunately I wasn't quite sure which station to get off at, as I am going to Panjim so it cost me a little more than it should have.

altmtl,
your tickets should get confirmed. dont worry about the extra fare. its probably Rs. 10 or lesser. Indian Railways follows a progressive fare calculation, which in english means that u pay more for the initial part of the journey and lesser and lesser as you go on. This is good to keep in mind - its cheaper to extend journeys with a tte than take new tickets, provided u r continuing on the same train...

Good point, others may understand better if you say the train departs just after midnight.

whenever I mention one of these trains, I always advise to be careful with the date when booking.

If I didn't know the rules on Indian Railways, I'd read that and think...."so I can book from A to B, then extend to C when on the train, this way I can find A to B availability when there's no A to C availability left".

But this may not work, Indian Railways are very strict when they think someone is trying to get around the reservation rules, for example....

A Mumbai to Chennai train will also have a quota for Mumbai to Solapur, and a quota for Solapur to Chennai, BUT, you're not allowed to book both legs of the journey to get you from Mumbai to Chennai when the Mumbai-Chennai quota is sold out.

But for short extentions it's worth a try.

Great news about the ticket, It will almost certainly get confirmed.

I'm using this train as an example in a new thread that I'm doing about waitlists, so here's a tiny bit of info about the train.

Train 0111 is the overnight train from Mumbai to Goa, one of the most popular trains used by tourists, it departs from Mumbai CST station (platform 15) daily at 23:05 and has 1A, 2A, 3A & SL, below is a diagram of the train, you enter the platform at the rear of the train and the Loco at the other end of the platform. (look on the arrivals board for train 0104, this train will become train 0111 and should take a minimum 45 minutes from arrival to be ready to depart)

LOCO-SLR-ll-ll--S10-S9-S8-S7-S6-S5-S4-S3-S2-S1-PC-B4-B3-B2-B1-A1-HA1-ll-ll-SLR

Thanks to Binaiks (a member of the Southern Railways discussion forum) for the rake configuration, very useful.

Below are the letters in the diagram, you'll also find the letters displayed on the carriages of the train (next to the carriage door), eg. B2 = 3-tier air con carriage number 2.

LOCO = locomotive
SLR = Luggage/parcel van/guard van with some 2nd class unreserved.
ll = 2nd class unreserved
S = Sleeper Class (SL)
PC = Pantry Car
B = 3-tier air con (3A)
A = 2-tier air con (2A)
HA = 1st class air con (1A) & 2-tier air con combination

Get off at Karmali.

I tried to get tickets for 3 times and thanks to the posts about trying the Axis portal I finally got through :-) It would have been so frustrating without this thread. Also works with Mastercard, not just Visa.

Nov 1st I'm travelling SL Delhi to Varanasi (I cant't wait to try this) and Nov 23rd 2A Goa to Mumbai.

I wanted to have upperberths, but how do I know if I got them?

Here's Steven's description of SL berths and nos:
Sleeper Class details & photos.
you can check here where they are! Looks to me as if you have upper berths there.

For 2A off the top of my head, I think 1, is the lower berth - so 2 and 4 would be the upper berths. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

All inside (not side) upper berths, 11 & 14 will be facing each other, same with 2 & 4.

A couple questions about the on line booking??

Hi guys, I have a few quiestions about on line e-ticket bookings via the IRCTC website. Sorry if these questions have allready been answered but I dont have the time to read through all the posts.
1) Do I need to pick the tickets up befoer boarding or is the e-ticket along with the photo ID enough to board the train??
2) The tickets I booked today are for OCT 31 from Delhi to Bikaner on #AC class but they are waitlisted as WL4 and WL5. What happens if the desired amount of cancellations arent made??
3) Finally I had a terrible time pon the booking site, I have tried several computers at a variety of different times so is it that Im trying to do it from Vietnam or is this site just realy bad?? I keep getting service not available, or timed out, or a variety of other error messages.
Thanks for your time in advance!!
Cheers
Nick

Dear indiafirsttime,

The tickets I booked today are for OCT 31 from Delhi to Bikaner on #AC class but they are waitlisted as WL4 and WL5.

##Did you book the I-Tickets (OR) E-Tickets, because you cannot make a booking using both these methods simultaneously?

What happens if the desired amount of cancellations arent made??

##Very simple - you are NOT permitted to enter the train and as such, you cannot commence your journey!!!
