I was trying to book non- AC FC online for some passenger trains that have this class listed as available on the indianrailinfo website. I found I could buy e-tickets for those passenger trains, but only for sleeper berths not the non-AC FC berths. Is this part of the policy of phasing out non-AC FC, that you can't reserve them with e-tickets? Or was it a case of the old FC being recently phased out just for the passenger trains I was after?

www.erail.in is the most user friendly train search website, and doesn't have nearly as many mistakes as other websites, but I have seen the wrong class listed a couple of times (and should have reported it to them ), but if you click on the class (for availability), you'll find the class isn't available on the train, but this is rare on erail. What train were you looking to book? |

For short journeys (less than 4 hours) it's often worth just buying a 2nd class unreserved ticket (read below) and upgrading on the train, I say upgrade, but often I just go through the motions with the TTE, and he mostly says "I'll sort it out with you in a while, then I just sit by the open carriage door and don't see the TTE again.
I don't know if the following will be useful to you, it was a reply to another member about just buying tickets prior to travel........ You can buy a 2nd class unreserved ticket, this will only be valid for the unreserved carriages of 'Passenger' trains. Passenger trains are slow trains that mostly call at all stations, they use a different price structure that Mail/Express/Superfast trains, Passenger trains usually only have 3 numbers, and sometimes some letters to indicate what rail company operates the train, for example, 321NCR is the Mathura-Deeg-Alwar Passenger, a train operated by North Central Railways. Mail/Express trains have higher prices than Passenger trains, and the minimum permitted ticket to board the train is a '2nd class Express' ticket, an ordinary 2nd class ticket is not valid on a Mail/Express train, Mail/Express trains usually have 4 numbers. e.g., Jhelum Express, train number 1078. (no Mail/Express train number starts with a 2) A 'Superfast' train is a Mail/Express train with an average speed of over........get ready for this......of over.......you're going to get really excited........are you sitting down.....of over 55kms per hour, (lift your jaw back into place), Indian Railways have a 'Superfast' charge, so if you want to board a superfast train, the minimum accepted ticket is a '2nd class Superfast' ticket, all superfast trains have 4 numbers, but the first number will be a 2. e.g. Mangala Lakshadweep Express, train number 2618. The additional superfast charge is about Rs10. When you go to buy a 2nd class ticket, the ticket seller will sometimes ask what train you want to use, (and they don't go by train numbers as they know all the train names), this is so they can give you the correct ticket, but they don't always ask. This 2nd class express or 2nd class superfast ticket is only valid for unreserved carriages, but you can always try your luck and ask (on the train) if you can be upgraded to Sleeper Class for a small additional charge and an additional reservation fee (Rs20). There are no unreserved carriages on Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains, so you can't enter those trains without a reservation, (I was fined for doing this from Mathura to Bharatpur, quite a hefty fine, maybe Rs300-400, I can't remember.), All Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains are superfast trains, but you have to check the train name to see if it's a Rajdhani or a Shatabdi as they also have 4 numbers beginning with a 2. |

I think you were trying to book on a Passenger trains. First Class does exist on almost all "Passenger trains". Here Passenger trains refer to most ordinary trains and there is no reservation for them. You just need to buy aticket before the train departure time from your station.

Gaurav you know it is still possible to select the passenger trains on the online site for buying e-tickets and the option offered is usually sleeper class. As I think may have been mentioned in one of the earlier posts, on most of those trains the FC class has been phased out for more sleeper carriages.

There are some Passenger trains on which reservation is allowed in Sleeper category but these Passenger do have a higher class at least 3AC if not First Class.
Those Passenger trains in which even Sleeper reservation is not allowed have unreserved First Class . |

I believe there are still some running in Gujurat on the old narrow gauge tracks. I took one about 5 years ago. These are private compartment style like the old British Rail cars with the compartments on one side - a private lockable door and an aisle running down the other side of the car. It wasn't particularly great, being as it was on narrow gauge tracks. It was like trying to sleep atop a bucking bronco.
