No trains from Pune to Aurangabad!?! Help!!!

Hi,

I'm currently working in Pune and would like to visit the Ajanta/Ellora caves in Aurangabad. However, when I use the "trains between stations" link on the indian rail website, i.e. indianrail.gov, I can't seem to find any trains from Pune JN to Aurangabad. I read that I could take a train to Jalgaon instead but all these appear to be full right up to July.

I'm not sure if I'm doing the search right, could anyone tell me what trains I could take to get there and back within one weekend!?!

Something wrong here. That area has since become a major indusrial axis. So I feel there was an error in your search. See if you can get Stephen to help out the search.

Its been a quarter of a century since I was on this route but check out trains 44 & 2729.

44 is a table number although to what reference, I don't understand. I check out train 2729 on the indian rail website, it only runs on Mondays and Wednesdays and I've only got weekends off.

More importantly, I need to be able to make an online booking for the trains on irctc.co and it shows nothing from Pune to Aurangabad or from Aurangabad to Pune.

Can anyone help with this? I'm planning to take an overnight train on the 27th of June (Friday) from Pune Jn to Aurangabad and then arrive on the night of the 29th of June (Sunday) back in Pune again.

By the way, are the ajanta/ellora caves a one day visit or are two days required?

2729 Pune Nanded Exp departs Pune at 22:00 and arrive at Aurangabad at 5:23 AM. This train runs on Monday & Wed.

Hey thanks! So which is nearer to the caves, Jalgaon or Aurangabad station?

So the suggested itinerary is Pune-Jalgaon-Ellora Caves-Ajanta Caves-Jalgaon-Pune?

By the way, how long does it take to cover the caves? I'm trying to figure out what is the earliest train back to Pune that I can catch.

Take two days -- one day each -- for the caves. it's going to be hot and thre's some walking involved ... you'll need a night's rest.

Here's the trick one station is closer to one of the sites and vice versa so take your pick. This you can spot on a map. Which town is better? Aurangabad is bigger with better restaurants and rare communal tension and a very nice site. Can't remember anything about the other. I suppose you could open jaw the rail travel, hmm..

The Ajanta caves are at a distance of 105 Kms. from Aurangabad on Aurangabad-Jalgaon Road.

Why are you taking a train man? You should have taken Volvo Bus that leaves in the night around 12. Equally confortable and saves time as well. Should reach to Aurangabad by 5 am. The distance is hardly 220 kms by road.
