There's a bus departs Siliguri daily at 21:00 and gets to Bangalore 3 days later.
I think what I meant to say was.......help yourself, give us the info to help you. If I searched and eventually found Sleeper Class berths to get you to Bangalore, then you said "I don't want Sleeper Class" I'd be furious. So please..... What class? I assume you're talking about trains and not planes. I hope you know your likely to be on a train for 40+ hours. |

Thanks Steven.
At this stage I am willing to take any seat From 2ac to sleeper or the bus. Have looked into planes and it will cost R6500-R11000 so I am just trying to save money. Do you have any more info on that bus? Would prefer to go on the train though if it comes to it a bus will do. Oh yes I know it will be a long trip |

Sorry, I was being sarcastic about the bus, my awful English sence of humour.
I assume your in Darjeeling or Sikkim. Find a place where you can book railway tickets, there are computerised reservation centres in Darjeeling and Siliguri, I don't know about Sikkim. Give me an hour and I'll see what I can find, there's nothing on the direct train, I just checked. |

I thought it sounded too good to be true.
Yeah Im in Darjeeling. Have gone though Trains at a Glance and the online booking system and can not figure a way. I went to the station booking office and was told there were no seats and no Tourist quota available. I will walk back up to the aliment and get back online when I am there. Appreciate your help Russ |

Train 2863 departs Howrah (Calcutta) daily at 20:35 and gets to Yesvantpur (Bangalore) 2 mornings later at 08:10
If you use the Tatkal (Last Minute) quota the following is available 13- 3-2007 2A = AVAILABLE- 0005 3A = AVAILABLE- 0041 SL = AVAILABLE- 0112 14- 3-2007 2A = AVAILABLE- 0003 3A = AVAILABLE- 0042 SL = AVAILABLE- 0064 2A = Rs 2289 3A = Rs 1699 SL = Rs 667 Book this now, getting to Calcutta should be easy, I'll go and check that now. |

superbimperial, sometimes it pays to make the journey not from point-to-point. Each railway station along a route has a quota of seats assigned to it. so sometimes when you have to go from point A to point Z, for example, you might be able to get a reservation from point C but not from A or B. so just try your luck this way. check for reservations from the first few stations on the route. I have done it several times myself and it works. hope it does for you too
) If that doesnt work, maybe you could hop to say, nagpur, and thence from there you could take another train to bangalore. kapish? |

Train 2344 departs New Jalpaiguri daily at 20:00 and gets to Sealdah (Calcutta) at 06:00
Again, using the Tatkal quota, there is availability in Sleeper Class only..... 12- 3-2007 AVAILABLE- 0131 13- 3-2007 AVAILABLE- 0160 SL = Rs 413 Don't let the reservation clerk fob you off with there being no Tatkal quota, or saying it's not available to tourists, I've got the info from the Indian Railway website just now. The fares above are high because they include the Tatkal charge (Rs 300 for air con, Rs 150 for SL class), Tatkal is only available for the entire route of the train, fortunately, both the suggested trains are perfect for you and both trains start their journeys from where you're boarding and end where you're getting off. evah is absolutely right about using other stations, wasn't really able to look into that now, the Indian Railways website is slow today. Good luck. Try filling in only one reservation form to save money. The Station from/to section would be for the ticket and would be Station From NJP - To Yesvantpur, but you would be Boarding at NJP with a Reservation up to Sealdah. In the ’Onward/return journey details’ section further down the reservation form, you would put the details of the second train, then Station From – Howrah, To – Yesvantpur. Your first train is called the Darjeeling Mail, the 2nd train is the HWH-YPR express. Understanding Reservation Forms. |

Steven, you have done it again. Thanks for your help with this, I never even knew about the Tatkal last minute booking quota.
This might just all come together. Have found someone on IM who is willing to have my concert tickets delivered to their place in Bangalore. Russ |

BTW, there's a great place in Howrah station for food, it's at the corner (as you walk in) of the 2nd Howrah Building (for the higher numbered platforms), the place does all kinds of food, and it's all good, but outside of their cafe, they sell Hyderabadi Biryani to take away, get some for the train, it's lovely.

Ok made it to Kolkata. Passing time in cafe and about to go to Fairlawn for a few cold Kingfishers. Then on the night train to bangalore.
Its all coming together nicely. Now I just need to find some ear plugs before this concert on Saturday. Russ |

Did you have any problems booking the train tickets using the Tatkal quota? (I've advised 2 others to do this in the last week, both never got back to me, but one put in a travelogue that he'd got a bus on the route, so I was wondering if booking clerks were being funny about giving tourists Tatkal tickets?) |

Thanks for your help with the booking I can see it now "Hey Bruce! can you scream a little quieter please" Right that Kingfisher is calling now, will let you know how this next part of the trip goes. |
