Nilgiri toy train
I have searched and searched and can't seem to find a schedule for the toy train to Ooty.
From Coimbatore, but i figure it probably only runs from Mettupalayam? Either way, i'm just trying to figure out what time i have to arrive from Calcutta without having to stay overnight in Coimbatore |

Head for Mettupalayam and overnight there. There are lots of small hotels by the station so you can be on the train and in the best seat before the main line trains get in

And book yourself a first class (FC) ticket! Now if I knew which seats are at the very front and have that great view - on a guess it should be the lowest numbers. Station codes are MTP for Mettupalayam and UAM for Ooty. The train leaves at 7.10hrs. If you come to the station a bit early you can watch the workers loading coal for your trip...

Thanks man. So the last one is 12 o' clock. I'm arriving at 12.30
However i figured i'll just drive up there and take the train down instead. Is that even possible |

The Kotagiri-Mettupallyam road is better, and the scenery is good, but you will miss the spectacular scenery on the Ooty-Mettupallyam road. I recommend the train. |

We decided to take a different route instead. The travel plan became too hectic, so we removed a few places. Well actually only Ooty

It was great when I travelled it two years ago, but just one monsoon (or even just one storm!) can change everything. Parts of the road were actually destroyed just a week or two after our visit. The railway was shut down for weeks too.

When we visited Ooty in 2003 (the train up and the drive down the other side to Masinagudi are worth the trip alone, even if Ooty itself is a bit of a disappointment) we picked up the 2671 Chennai to Mettupalaiyam Nilgiri Express in the middle of the night at Erode and arrived just after 6 in the morning, in time to catch the little blue train. We had seats No 1 and 2 in First Class, right at the front of the train, so were able to get a good view of the wild elephants crossing the line and stopping the train for a few minutes. A real highlight of a great trip.
