Hi

I am new on this site and am planning my first trip to India in December 2008/January 2009 that I am really excited about.

We really want to catch the Nilgiri Blue Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam to Ooty. If it is possible to pre book an e-ticket on the train can someone explain how I go about it as I haven't been able to get the IRCTC Website to recognise Ooty or Mettupalayam as stations.

If it isn't possible to pre book has anyone got any tips to make sure we get a good seat on the train. Where should we stay the night before and can you buy tickets the day before we travel? We were considering staying in Coimbatore but if it is better to stay in Mettupalayam then please let me know.

Thanks for all your help.

Kevin

If you can make it to Mettupalayam the day before I would suggest you do. I had to get up at 4am when i stayed in Coimbatore only to find the train was delayed 2 hrs, so a long wait on the platform. Still managed to make the connection for the toy train though. KK

Thanks for the responses. I have managed to find the stations now with the codes. My spelling was a little out. I am not able to book but assum that is because I am not travelling until the 06 January 2009 and therefore it is to far in advance.

Any recommendations for places to stay and eat in Mettupalaiyam as I don't want to miss the Toy train?

Thanks again

Kevin, more details would lead to more useful info.

For example, where do you land in India?

There's an overnight train, the Nilgiri Express, it departs Chennai Central daily at 21:00 and gets to Metuppalaiyam at 06.15, it has 5 different classes (1A, 2A, 3A, FC and SL), but I suggest you try FC, this is the old non air con First Class (Rs734), this class is wonderful but the carriages are rare and being phased out, try to use this class when you get the opportunity.

The Blue Mountain toy train waits for the Nilgiri Express if it's running late.

Just to follow on from this thread, I've been given the link for the timetable in another post on here, but I'm not sure if it's up to date: http://www.nilgiris.asia/index.php/n...timetable.html

I'm trying to book the Coonoor to MTP leg that leaves Coonoor at 10.35, but it's not coming up on the Indian Railway site. Does that mean it's not bookable (I booked the Ooty-Coonoor part OK) or is it just not running that train anymore? I was planning on catching it on 30.12.08. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Not seeing that one either - there is unreserved train 0669 at 1330 with bookable 661 at 16.15 --- cant see availability status for 30 dec right now.

Thanks for checking, it's interesting that there are unreserved trains then which might mean this 10.35 from Coonoor does exist. That said, all the train numbers on the timetable from this link begin with '5' and I'm sure all the toy trains now begin with '6'. It would be great to know for sure as I'm trying to organise a driver to take us to Cochin afterwards, and I need to tell him where to pick up from - is there any other way I could find out for certain?

Thanks!

You're right, this is a lot more user friendly - thanks for the tip. No sign of the 10.35 train on the timetable though - what a shame

Caro -
I was just thinking its probably about 20km or between the two places so you can take taxi or bus so easily for reasonable rate any time of day you like. As you will have experienced train on way to Conoor from Ooty... they more interesting part -- you can get over missing the second leg ---
I assume you arenot going up by train.

Does the road follow the same route as the train for the Coonoor-MTP part of the trip then? That would take the sting out of it a a bit, although it would be great to make to the most of the train (that's the main reason we're coming to Tamil Nadu).

Don't suppose you know any good drivers? I can't get through to the one I've been recommended...
