Nightmarish period for IR to begin?

Low-cost airlines are all set to dominate the Indian skies from this month ! With Deccan Aviation leading the way, it is only a matter of time before others follow suit.

News :

Where does that leave the Indian Railways??????

it's another inroad. Not too long back, IR had a monopoly on effective transport over long disances. Low cost air, fast, comfy busses, and all these cars people have now all add up. No more monopoly for IR!

the problem for IR is that something like 70% of their passenger revenue comes from upper-class fares, which in effect, subsidize the rest. Cheap air fares are a threat to the a/c class revenues as middle-class travellers now have a reasonable option. As far as I know, Deccan is the first airline to use the same fares for non-residents as well as residents, another 'good break' for tourists.

IR will not run out of business. Railway is less polluting/person traveled than any other modes of transport. Car is the worst. And the subsidy for passenger fare comes mostly from the railway’s freight income.

Thanks for that I just had a collection of snaps taken when visited one of the rail museums here.

The photo is not of a real railway station though it appears so with the splashed coal and all. This is an old steam engine at a museum for people (kids) to explore and play with.

Thanks for the image Beach. Trains are my favorite way of seeing India. May they live long and prosper.
Has anyone ridden the steam train called the "Fairy Queen"? This web site mentions trips from Delhi.

This looks like a good site for steam buffs as well.

Mumbai - ND by road in 13 hours?

Still more competition for IR in the offing, particularly for the Rajdhani Expresses between Mumbai and New Delhi :

Shimla, Rediff is referring to suggestions in the "Economic survey of India" ..IMO, these things if at all get implemented takes decades...good if they do it as some competition to IR is necessary.

even with the 13 hours of Drive from Delhi-Mumbai, I would take the Rajdhani..as I can read a book relaxing and sleep whenever I feel like.

Ashish, though I'm an IR fan, I do agree that it certainly needs competition.

However, if as you say these things take decades to materialise, then I suppose that IR too will progress during this period and maybe it'll have a "Super Rajdhani Express" which may cover the ND-Mumbai distance in 8 or 9 hours!!

Think the majority of the people will not make the switch as they have been so used to the rail system...

in any case, there will still be additional cost involved to travel to the airport..

so going to a nearby train station may still be an good idea for now..

I can't bear to think of any other way to see India than by train!

Whichever country your in (except GB) - the train has got to be the best way to travel. It brings people together like no other form of transport.
It gave me some of the most memorable contact I had with local people throughout my first trip to India.

Long live IR!
