As the late, great & hysterically funny Gilda Radnor said: "Nevermind"

My first long train ride (25 hours) came almost immediately after a very uncomfortable 15 hour bus ride and while I was nursing a miserable cold, so the upper bunk in 2AC was a haven of peace and comfort.

While it's not private in the sense that you have a room to yourself, I didn't feel particularly exposed either. I made sure to wear comfortable clothes that I could sleep in, but I suppose if you wanted a extra privacy to change or something you could attach the sleeping sheet provided to the chains that support the upper bunk to enclose yourself somewhat.

I second Camelgirl's suggestion of fruit, nuts and biscuits. We also carried a small jar of peanut butter for an easily portable protein source and plenty of water. You can get potato chips, candy bars, baked goods...all kinds of snacks.

For security we used a 6-foot bike cable rather than a chain, and a combination lock instead of one requiring a key. I have a history of putting keys in safe places and then forgetting where they are. The cable was lightweight and coiled up nicely while we weren't using it and long enough to wrap around two packs and connect to the bars.
