I've finally had a chance to look at the rail budget in detail, there's lots of great news for tourists.

EDIT NOTE: - All notes in blue were added on 14th Feb 2008, almost a year after the budget, this is to show updated info, however, this is from memory so may not be totally accurate.

New Trains planned

Bikaner-Jaisalmer Express (Two pairs)(Daily, via newly completed direct line) Both trains started in the middle of 2007, though one train uses Lalgarh Jn, 3km from Bikaner station.

Mumbai-Aurangabad Jan Shatabdi Express (6 Days in a Week) Started Feb 2008

Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express via Madurai (Daily) Started Feb 2008

Mumbai-Ajmer/Udaipur Express (3 Days in a week)(via Ratlam, with train splitting at Chittaurgarh) Started middle of 2007

*Trivandrum-Lokmanya Tilak (Mumbai) Garib Rath Express (2 days in a week) Started Feb 2008

*New Delhi-Dehradun Garib Rath Express (3 days in a week) still not running, no news of planned introduction

*The Garib Rath trains are new, probably a little more cramped as they hold more passengers in each 3-tier air con and Air Con Chair Class carriage, but the fares for these trains are about a third less than other express trains, and the Garib Rath’s are sometimes as fast as the Rajdhanis.

Extension of trains.

1103/1104 Agra Cantt.-Nizamuddin Intercity Express up to New Delhi (better for Paharganj) still not extended, no news of planned introduction.

2413/2414 Jammu Tawi-Jaipur Express up to Ajmer (this is a good overnight train to/from Chakki Bank (Pathankot) for Dharamsala) extended middle of 2007.

2465/2466 Jodhpur-Sawai Madhopur Express up to Indore (maybe bad news, this will be a daytime train and the extra distance will make the train less reliable when heading towards Jodhpur) extended middle of 2007.

Increase in frequency.

2309/2310 New Delhi-Patna Rajdhani Express (from 2 days in a week to daily) just checked, increased, don't know when.

6603/6604 Trivandrum-Mangalore Express (from 3 days in a week to daily) increased, don't know when.

6315/6316 Bangalore-Kochuvelli (Trivandrum) Express (from weekly to 3 days in a week) increased, don't know when.

New Line.

a new broad gauge line is being built from Mahoba to Khajuraho, this line is expected to be operational by the start of next year. first train expected to run 15th Feb 2008.

Gauge Conversion.

Ratlam-Chittaurgarh has now been converted to Broad Gauge (For Mumbai, Indore or Jalgaon - Udaipur trains), Chittaurgarh-Ajmer will be completed shortly. (For Jodhpur or Ajmer - Udaipur trains) converted line opened middle of 2007.

Palanpur-Gandhidham will also be Broad Gauge soon, Palanpur is just south of Abu Rd, this line will allow access to Bhuj without having to go through Ahmedabad. converted line opened middle of 2007.

Madurai-Rameshwaram will also be Broad Gauge very soon. converted line opened middle/late 2007.

Still no news of the Mangalore - Hassan - Mysore/Bangalore route, this line is operational and trains have been announced (daytime and overnight), but no trains running so far. line opened late 2007, only overnight train running.

Please reply to this thread if you hear of any new trains, new routes opening, other routes closing or any related subjects.

"New Line.

Steven, did anything come of this plan? When I tried to input Khajuraho into the official train site, it didn't know what I was talking about.

A very high percentage of all the new trains and lines announced in last year's budget are being rushed through at the very last minute, just before the new budget (last week of Feb), the railway minister seems like a very crafty man.

The Mahoba-Khajuraho* line opens tomorrow (Friday), I've seen mention of a direct train to Agra (though this would almost certainly run through to Delhi), and a one-off mention of a train to Varanasi, we'll have to wait and see.

* - If what I read is correct, the line won't go all the way to Khajuraho, but will initially terminate at a place about 15kms from Khajuraho, the last 15kms stretch is still being built. (I'll add the name of the place after I check for updates)

The way I'm searching for this new train is....(on the Indian Railway website), search for trains from Mahoba to Jhansi, then on the results page scroll over Mahoba and you'll find out where the train starts it's journey, but remember that this train may not run daily. (I searched yesterday but found no new train)

EDIT The train from Mahoba will run up to Dumra station about 11kms from Khajuraho.

No further updates today.

Thanks, Steven, I'll be looking to see if this route suddenly appears on the rail website. Should make a lot of difference for people travelling to Khajuraho. I recall doing a six-hour bus journey twice to get there, and occasionally the potholes were so big that you couldn't see the countryside -- some of the most beautiful we saw in India -- from the bus windows (well, not quite).

No, the railways are easy, just a bit of geography and some timetables, for real quality stuff, look in the Articles section, and there are so many other gems dotted around indiamike, it's just a question of finding them.

Hi steven_ber,

Do you have any more updates regarding the new Mahoba to Khajuraho line. It does not show up on the Indian railways website. (re: your advice #6) I have been checking since the 15th Feb. cheers

Same here, I've been checking many different ways to find out about this train and I've not found a thing.

I will keep looking (it's the first thing I do when I turn on my computer) and will reply to this thread as soon as I find out anything.

The train may be running, the Indian Railway website is often weeks behind in adding new info, and one thing is sure, the railway minister will want the train running before the rail budget (next Tuesday), even if it's being pulled by 2 bullocks.

Steve, what is the news on the Khajuraho line?
Is a direct train from Delhi starting soon?
Sorry I'd not read the post above!
