Tatkal booked on IRCTC, wanted to clarify rules please help
My sister booked a tatkal ticket from gulbarga to delhi.
Train was from Bangalore to Delhi
As you know tatkal has to be booked for entire journey.
When you book manually in the counter, you can enter Gulbarga to Delhi, But they charge for you entire route. and you get boarding from Gulbarga printed.
But in IRCTC if you select gulbarga to delhi it says not available.
You have to select Bangalore to Delhi.
There is no option for entering Boarding station. So my sister booked the ticket
When she boarded the train she saw people were already sitting.
She made them get up, But they were fighting. Around 4 TCs came and told her the rules including the passengers.
That after 3 stations the seat will be given to someone else. Since the ticket was booked from bangalore and gulbarga is many stations after that the seat was given to someone else.
My sister argued that since this is a tatkal, ticket.
The rules apply to normal ticket. The fact that there is not option to add a boarding station in IRCTC.
I think it is the railways fault.
The reason there is not boarding station is because the ticket is booked for the entire journey and the T.C. cannot give it to some one else.
My sister never got up. The T.C. told her to go to another seat. But she refused and told them to to send this other person there.
After a few stations the original ticket holder of that seat entered the train, with the same situation. They too fought and made the person get up. they argued the same case, that since the ticket is booked for entire journey how can it be given to someone else. Since it is tatkal ticket, Normal ticket means ok
What I wanted to know if there are any rules specifically for tatkal.
I think it is irctc fault that if the same rules apply for tatkal ticket then why did they not have boarding station option.
I also feel that since the same rules do not apply to tatkal and the ticket cannot be given to anyone else, irctc decide to do away with the option of adding a boarding station, as it is not neccesary
Any expert opinion or links to rules that state otherwise.
Even if the rule states otherwise, then don't you think it is irctcs fault they do not have option to add boarding station.
Thank you

You can change boarding station on IRCTC when booking a Tatkal ticket, or you could the last time I checked.We've got a post somewhere about how to do it, if I remember right, there's a little train image you click on.

There is definitely an option to enter the boarding station. I did it about 8 weeks ago and I am pretty certain that the prompt about which station you wanted to get on at came up automatically. I vaguely remember being impressed at the time that they had this cracked.
Are we sure about the 3 stations rule? Could be handy when you are not sure EXACTLY where you are going to want to get on. My understanding was that if you did not get on at the booked station your seat could be given away immediately.

qwan- I booked a ticket online a few days back from Mumbai to Cancona, boarding at Thane. It was for a General quota ticket (not Tatkal)... but my guess is that it should be the same...
When you Book your ticket, the "Boarding station" is a field (i think on the top left) on the same page where you enter passenger names/age etc.

New Tatkal rules
Railways on Monday announced a reduction in tatkal charges for various classes, a move which will come into effect from October 1.
The new tatkal charges will be levied at the rate of 10% of basic fare for second class and 30% of basic fare for all other classes, said an official release.
The charges will be levied uniformly both in peak period and non-peak periods.
As per the revised charges, passengers will have to pay between Rs 10 and a maximum of Rs 15 in second class (seating).
Similarly, passengers reserving a berth in sleeper class will have to pay between Rs 75 to a maximum of Rs 150.
Tatkal charges for AC Chair Car will range between Rs 75 to Rs 150 and in AC three tier it will range between Rs 200 to Rs 300.
Likewise, in AC 2 Tier, the charges will be levied between Rs 200 to Rs 300 and in executive classes it will be levied in the region of Rs 200 to Rs 300.
Tatkal facility will be introduced in executive class of Shatabdi trains also by earmarking 10 per cent of the accommodation available i.e. 5 seats per coach, the release said.
Railways had earlier announced reduction of the advance reservation period under tatkal scheme from five days to 2 days

So do you like the new rules? Or have the charges one up? To think of it I have never used Tatkal till date.
Advice/help wanted.
I want to get a Tatkal reservation (2AC) departing Oct 3rd on Falaknuma Exp from Sec'bad to Kharagpur.
Would someone be able to advice how to go about it - I guess the booking will start on Oct 1st at 8 am (2 days before start of journey not including the day of the journey). My main concern is that the IRTC site will be over-loaded and if I do get a W/L what does that mean?
I have done a search of Tatkal topics and feel that the information (especially given the new rules) is lacking and would be useful for many IMers.
Cheers

Dear nattusbs,
My main concern is that the IRTC site will be over-loaded
##You are right. Hence, you MUST approach ONLY the PRS Counter. Whether you get a confirmed ticket or not, depends upon
i) your place in the Queue;
ii) the time at which the clerk opens the system;
iii) the speed with which the clerk works;
iv) the persons before you should NOT ask for Tatkal in the Train in which you wanted to buy the Tatkal Ticket.:-)
-----------
and if I do get a W/L what does that mean?
##This means you have been put in the Waiting List, and if somebody cancels his Tatkal Booking, then you will get confirmed.

hi all,
now I think as per new tatkal rule, you dont need to take ticket from first station to last staion (where train terminates). I think you can take tatkal tickets upto any station onroute. Is it true ?

No !
You need to buy ticket from starting station to endiang station but can get in or out at any station enroute.Except 5days to 2 days and change in charges,everything remains same.[but there are some trains in which tatkal is allowed in between stations.e.g.- You can buy tatkal ticket from Mumbai to Tirupati in Kanyakumari express.]
