Thanks Vinobhojak - this is helpful. I did a quick comparison between the existing Delhi-Jaisalmer train and this one and given below is how these two stack up:

Plus points of new train (12371) vs old (14659) for Delhi-JSM sector:

a) Saves a full 5 hours traveling between Delhi and Jaisalmer.
b) Goes via Bikaner, Phalodi and can be used for those stations.
c) Timing isnt too bad while coming from Jaisalmer to Delhi. Leaves at 20 mins past midnight on a Thursday and reaches at 2:45 pm that day.

Negatives:
a) Day journey on a working day: The train leaves Delhi at 10:40 am Tuesday and arrives at 11:20 pm the same day in Jaisalmer.
b) There's no first aircon either.
c) Once a week.

why does it go to delhi at all? should it not divert from lucknow to kanpur/agra/jaipur/jodhpur? seems to be more of a political trick by tmc to show that one more train added to hwh list!!!

This train starts 2 days before the rail budget, there's a surprise.

Do trains no longer need to reverse at Pokaran?

The Varanasi-Bareilly section is where the delays will most often occur.

I'm surprised the train will go into Bikaner to reverse, why not reverse at Lalgarh?

Is this rake really going to sit at Jaisalmer for 24 hours? (can't see that lasting)

(Indiarailinfo not showing intermediate stations between Jaisalmer & Bikaner)

@ steven Between Bikaner and Jaisalmer, it stops only at Phalodi ... this train doesn't go on the pokaran route, its on the ramdevra route.

no comments on the timing of the announcement though!

@ param - Routing via delhi makes perfect sense to have enough passengers onboard. Delhi-JSM is routinely sold out in Aircon class due to tourist traffic.

my rant exactly - so this is nothing but a HWH-DLI + DLI-JSM merged into one train number - the intent was not to cater to the HWH-JSM traffic at all (not that it is an exception in that regard)...
