I wonder if a ticket was booked from Patna to CTC (or BBS) if the availability would go up to 3 from BBS (although the berths wouldn't all be together).

Quite likely that is a correct explanation.

this theory certainly makes a lot more sense. that would explain why availability goes UP after a few days.
anyway, in my case, i need 3 tkts for sure, so i think i'm better off booking from CTC to get assured availability...

Try it, but on the qt. Because once the railways knows about it, they'll just clamp it down. Airlines used to have a (and still do) a hidden city ticketing/pricing. But they have clamped down on people who exploited the loophole, and sometimes the airlines do nasty things such as scrap the whole itn. and worse.

thanks to everyone for their inputs & suggestions. special thanks to steven for the info on CTC quota. i did manage to get 3 seats in 3A for CTC-PGT. just a few minutes later, i noted that it has already gone to WL... BBS-PGT still has 2 seats available & i'm tempted to try that trick (pnbe-bbs booking), but i'm quite sure i won't get the seats together, looking at my past track record

There are two, the Chennai Trivandrum Express (12695) and the Chennai Mangalore Express (16107)

It is another story that very few passengers are likely to choose these trains fro MAS-PGT travel.

as i understand PQWL is Pooled Quota Waiting List. This indicates that your journey is part of a quota allocated to intermediate journeys (instead of end-to-end).

PQWL is a start-end quota.
