Are you talking about planes or trains?

I will give you the train info and you can decide for yourself, though from experience, a long train journey before the long flight home is hard work on the body.

Are you working in Mumbai?

If not, what is the last place you'll be visiting before Mumbai?

If that place has direct trains to either Hubli or Guntakal you could add half a day by avoiding Mumbai.

Train info....

Mumbai to Hubli.

Train 1017 (1035 on Tuesdays) departs Dadar (mumbai) at 22:45 and gets to Hubli at 14:28 the next day. (2A, 3A, SL)

Hubli to Hospet (Hampi).

Train 6591 departs Hubli daily at 17:00 and gets to Hospet at 19:55. (1A, 2A, 3A, SL)

Hospet to Hubli.

Train 6592 departs Hospet daily at 07:45 and gets to Hubli at 11:05. (1A, 2A, 3A, SL.)

Or

Train 7225/7227 departs Hospet daily at 08:50 and gets to Hubli at 12:15. (2A, 3A, SL.)

7225 (M, W, Th, Su.) 7227 (Tu, F, Sa.)

Hubli to Mumbai.

Train 1018 (1036 on Thursdays) departs Hubli daily at 14:40 and gets to Dadar (Mumbai) at 07:20 the following morning. (2A, 3A, SL.)

Fares. (singles, one direction)

2A = 1143 & 438 = Rs 1581
3A = 724 & 256 = Rs 980
SL = 269 & 121 = Rs 390

Cool Telescoping fares

Steven, are you aware that telescoping fares save you money?

In the above example, buy a single ticket one way to Hospet and a reservation on the first train upto Hubli. You can get a "reservation only" ticket on the second train and you will save some money this way.... cuz the longer the distance paid for, the lesser the per-km price.

I have done this myself [booked a ticket from Mumbai to Kathgodam on Golden Temple mail with reservation upto New Delhi... then a reservation slip for the connecting Ranikhet express]. Not sure if internet booking will provide for this situation.

We think alike AvidTrekker.

See here. (and scroll down)

I thought about adding the info to the above reply, but wasn't even sure if the OP wanted train info.

AvidTrekker, I think there is an airline flied daily from Mumbai to Belgaum, and I'm sure one of the cheap airlines started a daily service from Belgaum to Hubli, only I've lost my plane timetable, have you any idea if this info is correct?

No, these 'through' tickets can't be booked on the internet.

Air Deccan flies to Belgaum daily. I found a fare of Rs 1904 each way, departing Mumbai 8 October and returning on 12 October. Gets you there in a hair under two hours.
