I feel I really must thank all the members who posted in the thread and especially stiven_ber who started it... It's still a month till me and my friends will go from Mumbai to Goa - and there are no tickets available for the train I'd like to get - but thanks to you all I've bought tickets for us 2 weeks ago!!! If I had not seen this thread - I think I'd left all "tickets shopping" till I've arrived to Mumbai - and would have to change all my itinerary
I hope my e-tickets will be OK - now I'm starting nervouse about it

Why shouldn't they be? As long as you remember to print them and take them with you, and they have the correct passport number on them, you'll be absolutely fine.

In fact, I don't recall a ticket inspector ever asking to see my passport to compare its number with that on the ticket.

Before boarding the train, take a look at the passenger charts on the platform. The first time I used an Indian train, I was amazed to see that my name was actually there, and that the carriage and berth matched my e-ticket. It was a great relief.

Last year I've used usual tickets - but was amazed too!!! But the best thing was when I've bought waitlist ticket and 3 hours before the depature could find my ticket at the website as confirmed... The system works!!!

Bump.

In other threads, our members are talking about how difficult it is to buy any ticket on-line at the moment, one big reason....

60 days from now is the begining of the Christmas holiday period, so expect the IRCTC website to be very slow for the next couple of weeks.

That had occurred to me too, Steven. The weekend before Christmas has just come into the ARP.

I have found that the system is least responsive in the morning in the UK and most responsive between 5pm and 6.30pm - i.e. when it's very late in the evening in India, the middle of the night in Australia and the middle of the working day in the US (and we in Europe have the system almost to ourselves )

Bump.

I've not got time to do a new thread on this subject, but expect trains to be even busier this year, the Indian Railway website has gone to sleep for the night so I can't do checks, but I wouldn't be surprised if the overnight Mumbai-Goa train (0111) is close to waitlists already for the few days up till Christmas and the few days up till new year.

Remember, you can now book up to 91 days in advance.

This is a great tip, unfortunately it throws my take it day by day theory out the window, I'll have to plan & book in advance even more as I was thinking of going to Hampi the first week of Jan.

its the biggest part of my trip so pls advise :P
Have you got the station codes right: LTT and ERS.
ERS is Ernakulam Junction, the train station for Kochi.

I'm not sure, but that train appears to be currently fully waitlisted yes (some RAC, in the high numbers). I guess booking for it may well have closed.

There would appear to be currently availability still (better get booking asap for these, I guess) on that day in:

2618 MNGLA LKSDP EXP from KYN (Kalyan Junction) departs 08.50 to ERS (Ernakulam Junction) (Only Sleeper Class left)
2978 MARU SAGAR EXP from BSR (Vasai Road) dep. 03.50 to ERS (Sleeper Class)
6337 OKHA ERS EXPRES from BSR dep. 20.30 to ERS (3A, Sleeper Class)

Both these departure points may well be suburbs or even satellite towns btw, perhaps there are more convenient Mumbai stations along their routes (Panvel?) I don't know the local geography that well. And note that Ernakulam is just a part of Kochi/Cochin btw, it sees the more trains I think.

nb These (always tentative) results are from http://erail.in/ ; best to always check results with the official one http://www.indianrailways.gov.in/ , which you'll need for booking anyway (and which Angel was already using of course, just a general disclaimer).

... And nnb re-checking something here, I'm starting to wonder if I'm reading Erail's availability dates right at all. Aargh, I give up for now, why even offer help if you don't know what you're looking at.

Back to some more serious site studying first, I guess. Hey, one tries Sorry for any undue confusion or false information, I thought I was starting to get to grips with that site. Apparently not, then. Please consider the above spurious at best. The site's currently giving me some errors, so I can't do it over again either. Maybe later.
