Smile Margao to Hospet

I have done loads of research on the train journey between these two places and found lots of blogs and information but nothing that covers the train stops where you can buy food or any names of any stops along the way.
Or any information of the things we could expect along the way.

If someone has done this trip could you post info or point me in the right direction please.
I am looking forward to the unknown of the adventure but would like a little info which might help make it less scary for a 'train journey in India virgin'

Margao-Hospet stops

Hey Ali,
You can take the VSG HOWRAH EXP Train Nr 2848 from Madgaon (Margao) at 08h15 AM. It runs on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. You will arrive in Hospet at 15h10 PM. The trip will cost you around 210 RS in sleeper class. You can buy food in any station it stops, but some stops take only two minutes, so be fast ! Stops : Sanverdam Chuch at 08h38 (2 min), Kulem at 09h05 (5 min), Castle Rock at 10h05 (5 min), Londa JN at 10h38 (2 min), Hubli JN at 13h08 (7 min) and Gadag JN at 14h03 (2 min).
But if you travel sleeper class there will be lots of food available on the train. Vendors pass by about every 5 minutes. Have fun in Hampi !

Thanks for that.
So even in the day time should we go sleeper class?
I was going to book first class aircon but cant do that till 3 months prior to travel.

Er...is that a sarcastic "have fun in Hampi"????

I'd say "Especially during the day", particularly on this train, but only if you can get side berths.

Sleeper Class details & photos.

The journey is said to be very scenic as you rise from the sea through the hills and pass right in front of the Dudhsagar waterfalls.

There's no First Class air con on this train, there’s 2 & 3 tier air con and Sleeper Class, the sealed windows in air con carriages can slightly spoil the view and spoil any photos.

Fun in Hampi

No sarcasm Ali. Hampi is a great place. Be sure to check out the "Mango Tree" for lunch. The scenery is awesome !

Hubby and I have been to Goa but this time our youngest is coming too (21yrs)so there will be 3 of us travelling. He is so looking forward to this part of the holiday, hes a wanna be backpacker...but has a full time job that pays too much for him to leave and take 3 months off so hes going to have a small taster and maybe save up to go.

Thanks for all that info...its great just what I was looking for.

I have just read through more train info in articles
which says :-
but you have to collect the tickets personally from the railway office near the New Delhi station, even though the tickets may have nothing to do with Delhi trains. Unfortunately, as of right now only Delhi has this collection facility for tickets booked over the internet.

just to clarify does this mean that if I book Margao to Hospet on line I still have to collect the ticket from Delhi?

You don't need to pick up the tickets in Delhi, you can just print them at home by opting for the e-ticket instead of the i-ticket. So much easier to get before you leave and you will have your passport with you anyway so it should be your identity proof which is a must when you use a e-ticket. BTW, if I am not mistaken then the ticket pick up facility in Delhi is not available anymore.

You will surely have fun in Hampi, it is a place worth visiting for at least a few days and don't make the mistake of staying in Hospet, there are a lot of small guest houses in the Hampi Bazaar area or the KSTDC Hotel Mayura in Kamalapuram. Also there are a few places across the river which are even cheaper but then you have accessibility problems from evening to morning when river crossings are not possible. Hope you have a nice time there.

See Beach's thread on Hampi for the most detailed and informative post on IM.

Cheers,
Aadil.

well I have the guest house sorted and opted for Shanti over the river but I wil check out some of the others there and ask them questions I could not find answers to anywhere and post or do a holiday review thingy when I get back.

We are going SL on the 2848 as it sounds fun and then bus to Hampi....if i fall in the river crossing in one of those basket boat things I know who I am putting the blame on..........

The train journey is an amazing experience. The food sold on the train and at the stations is tasty and cheap and the scenery is breath taking. I too would not recommend staying in Hospet but in the Hampi area. The Mango Tree is one of the best lunch stops I have been to.

It only runs 4 days a week, so try entering a different date or use www.erail.in to view what days it runs.
