mangalore-mysore train?

does anyone know if there's a direct train from mangalore to mysore?
i've been trying to find one on indian railways and local web sites but all i get is busses. it seems strange that those two are not connected by railway. does anyone know anything about it?

There will be a train soon, but 'soon' in India can mean anything.

The direct line is being converted to Broad Gauge, I've seen reports that say it will be open by the end of this month, but I heard from a person living in Mangalore that there are still many months work left to do.

There should be lots of buses though.

there are over night buses, which is preferred by most. the overnight train from Managalroe to Bangalore moves really slowly due to the hilly terrain. You could take that train to Bangalore then another from Bangalore to Mysore.

There are no trains from Mysore to Mangalore. There are luxury buses run by the State Road Transport Corporation as well as private bus companies.
Buses operate throughout the day. Travelling by day is a better option.

prof lionel aranha => i'm going in november (i know it's still far away but i like to plan far ahead).
i don't like the option of going to bangalore first. i'll be in kundapura first(that's why i asked about mangalore), and then i want to go to mysore for a couple of days and then bangalore, hampi and so on... and if i go to bangalore first i'll be backtracking.

Fly into Bombay (Mumbai). Take a flight to Mangalore. And then you can be driven down to Kundapur......

Owing to guage conversion, there are no trains on Mangalore-Bangalore sector for the last 10 years.

That's right! Its a mess. Politicians and the private companies bus lobby dragged it for ten years. Still, there is a 50 kms stretch (in the mountains) that awaits completion.

thanks for the update Prof.

maja, you could fly from mangalore to bangalore (Air Deccan has some cheap fares if you book early enough) and then take a train to mysore.. but IMHO, it won't be worth the hassle.
