Hi!
I'm planning on doing a 3-4 month tour of the subcontinent. I'll be carrying an average-size backpack. I was hoping to leave my backpack (with most of my stuff) in train station lockers, and carrying essentials with me in a smaller bag for 1-2 day trips away from the major stations. Is this a good idea? realistic? safe? expensive? any alternatives? Thanks ![]() |

it is quite safe provided your baggage has good locking arrangements. normally, baggages are accepted in 'cloak rooms' for a nominal fee - on 24 hours basis. you will have to show proof by way of your journey tickets.

cloak rooms in railway stations
Some of the "CLOAK ROOMS" of Railway stations asks you to ensure that your backpack is locked.Otherwise they may refuse to accpet.
They keep on a 24hr basis and will charge some fee for safe keeping. It is a good idea and safe too. Though not sure, seems that they charge a fee of Rupees10 for 24hrs. Alternative would be to keep at the arrival airport or at a good hotel where you would be spending your first night. |

You can even find cloackrooms in inter-city busstations ! I often wanted to visit a city on the way when travelling from one city to another and I always used cloackrooms for that purpose - they were always correct and cheap (10 Rs)

The Railway cloak rooms are, as everyone above has said, just fine, and we used them a great deal; at the larger stations, they are open 24 hours.
We had only one mishap, but it's worth a mention here. Don't leave any foodstuffs in a soft bag in a railway cloak room. We did, in Indore, and two days later collected a backpack with a brand-new, rat-sized hole in the top, and a lot of "evidence" over all our clothing! |

Haha!
Thanks guys. I'm glad these cloak rooms exist. I won't have to carry all my stuff around all day. ![]() |
