lost in travel

Hello all, happy to have found this site. Wish I had more time to plan. The Ms and I have passes to and from India. We have to use them before 2/6/09. I'm retired, she's part time = so not much $.
Our plans are to fly NYC to Del arriving 1/26 nite.

We'd like to train to agra, back to Delhi. Then on to Mumbia. Next to Goa, then Back to Mumbai.

Our trip back to NYC is BOM to EWR 0n Feb. 3.

Still working out the details, but would like to book the following : Read about the 1) Shatabdi Express Del to Agra and back. 2) Rajdhani express Mumbai to Gao and back. Not sure of which days we'll be needing Jan, 27 thru feb 3. Will this work? Can we get tickets on the spot, day of travel?

Any suggestions? Any good budget hotels to be recomended in Delhi, Agra (I do'nt think we'll actually slep here), Mumbai, and Gao?

All advice, help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks kitafred

The Major's Den in Paharganj, Delhi, is a nice, safe budget place, especially for women. It's owned by a retired Indian Army officer who lives on site. The staff are friendly. My wife and I had dysentery there, a few years back, and they literally took care of us. It's off the main bazaar, next to the Imperial Theater if my memory serves me.

You're right about Agra: don't try to stay there. Day trip it from Delhi, even if that means renting a taxi. You can easily tour the fort and the Taj Mahal in a day. After that, there's really nothing left to do - may be go to Fatehpur Sikri or Madura. In the long run it's cheaper than staying in Agra, which is over-priced and absolutely full of touts. It seems to be really, really easy to get stuck in Agra if you're traveling by train. I was stuck there for nearly twenty days once, unable to get a ticket to go anywhere. My wife and I renamed the city Agravation.

I would book my travel at Delhi for the entire trip. Not sure about the Rajdhani, though, in terms of availability. I am always able to get tickets in India, at relatively short notice (1-3 days) but almost invariably end up on the Pokey Express, which is hauled across the burning landscape by a team of snails and spends half of each day on sidings while the Rajdhani roars by.
