Konkan railway help!

Hi! I am going to be in India in the end of Feb and have a few extra days. I was thinking about taking a train trip down the west coast from Mumbai. Figuring out the schedules and getting good information is harder than brain surgery!! The other posts I've read here have been extremely valuable, but I have some other questions that apply specifically to my own trip.

In theory, I would like to travel by train at nite, get off in the morning, sightsee, and then back on at nite so I don't have to get a hotel and can get moving to the next destination. Does anyone know if the timing for this can be worked out? The Raj. and Net. Express trains seem to run about 12 hours apart, so I was thinking of switching back and forth between them?

I was planning on buying a 7 day railpass. I would probably buy for one of the AC sleeper classes, but I can always sit in a cheaper class at some point, right? I think I'd like to ride at least once in the non-AC class to people watch and chat.

It looks like the Raj. Express comes thru Mumbai around 4 or 5 am. It seems that the two stations for this are Vasai Road and Panval. Is that correct and what is the best way to get to them from the airport?

Has anyone been to Malavan Marine Sanctuary? What is the best stop for it? Would you reccomend going?

Does anyone know if there are boat operators that will take you out on the sea to see marine mammals (I'm a marine biologist)? Where are they? Goa, maybe?

I think that's my list of questions for now... Thanks!

Allison

Ok, someone can more experienced will answer your questions specifically.

Konkan route is through very scenic landscapes. Never travel this by night or by the ac class (closed dark window). I recommend a day running train by second class (sleeper or otherwise). More stunning is the Goa to downward route.

Kudal train station is 28kms from Malvan marine sanctuary, Kudal is also 28kms north of Sawantwadi road train station.

Only one (slow passenger) train stops at Kudal, though some express trains stop at Sawantwadi road.

What other places do you plan to visit?

It can be very tiring if you don't have a hotel to rest at in the middle of the day.
