How do I see a Rail timetable and book through from Mumbai to Cochin? (India Railways site is less than easy) How long does the trip take and any tips?

Here is the full timetable of the Mumbai-Kerala Netravati Express.
In indiamike's 'Indian Railway' forum you will see a few threads advising how to book trains on-line.

Netravati is a good train for this route.
I have done this trip twice now - last time a few weeks ago. Takes about 12 hours to get from Mumbai to Madgaon in Southern Goa.
Both times the train ran about 3 hours late...
It's a very easy trip - beautiful scenery once you get into Goa state.
Frequent food and drinks are brought around. I highly recommend this trip but careful not to schedule any ongoing connections too close to the estimated arrival time, you will likely be late!

Konkan Kanya Express running late practically everyday
Konkan Kanya express from Mumbai CST to Madgaon is running late for 2 - 3 hrs, practically everyday. This is from personal experience as well as from other travellers exeriences.
This is attributed to an earthquake around 2 - 3 months back in the konkan belt. Hence the railways have asked the drivers to go slow.
Ronak.

damn that is quite worrying, I am catching Konkan Kanya Express in April to Mumbai, and my flight is @13:30, so I have 8 hour gap beetween arriving @ Dadar and my flight, I suppose I need only 45 minutes to get from Dadar to Airport, so I can allow my train to be 4:30 hrs late, but what are the chances of it being late more than that?

That post was a year old and it was about the train traveling in the other direction. You have plenty of time for your connection, so stop worrying.
